We deployed two wavelength calibrators based on laser frequency combs ("astro-combs") at an astronomical telescope. One astro-comb operated over a 100 nm band in the deep red (∼ 800 nm) and a second operated over a 20 nm band in the blue (∼ 400 nm). We used these red and blue astro-combs to calibrate a high-resolution astrophysical spectrograph integrated with a 1.5 m telescope, and demonstrate...

Telescope networks are gaining traction due to their promise of higher resource utilization than single telescopes and as enablers of novel astronomical observation modes. However, as telescope network sizes increase, the possibility of scheduling them completely or even semi-manually disappears. In an earlier paper, a step towards software telescope scheduling was made with the specification o...

Detectors play a key role in an astronomical observatory. In astronomy, the role of the telescope and instrument is to bring light to a focus in effect, the telescope-instrument act as “spectacles”. The detectors, meanwhile, have the critical role of sensing the light the detectors are the “eyes” of an observatory. The performance of an astronomical observatory is directly dependent upon the pe...

The paper presents an application of fuzzy logic controller (FLC) with hierarchically structured rule base for a two-link direct drive Celestron telescope. The hierarchical fuzzy logic controller (HFLC) is implemented, as nonlinear blocks used in a control system, for supervision of PID controller for position tracking of the telescope driven by electric motors. The HFLC is composed of two FLC ...

We present the first 1.3 mm (230 GHz) very long baseline interferometry model image of an AGN jet using closure phase techniques with a four-element array. The model image of the quasar 1924-292 was obtained with four telescopes at three observatories: the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) on Mauna Kea in Hawaii, the Arizona Radio Observatory’s Submillimeter Telescope (SMT) in Arizona, and 1...

The United Nations/European Space Agency workshops on basic space science are a long-term effort for the development of astrophysics and space science and regional and international cooperation in this field on a world-wide basis, particularly in developing nations. The first four workshops in this series (India (1991), Costa Rica and Colombia (1992), Nigeria (1993), Egypt (1994)) explored the ...

R. H. White Jet Propulsion Laboratory California Institute of Technology Pasadena, California 91109 Abstract. The Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS)* has completed an unbiased all -sky survey at wavelengths from 10 to 100 μm. The design and performance of the focal plane array is described with emphasis on in -orbit measurements of the sensitivity and stability. In the four broad spectral b...

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope is a project to map the microwave background radiation at arcminute angular resolution and high sensitivity in three frequency bands over substantial sky areas. Cosmological signals driving such an experiment are reviewed, and current progress in hardware construction is summarized. Complementary astronomical observations in other wavebands are also discussed.
