The mechanical properties of organic and biomolecular thin films on surfaces play an important role in a broad range of applications. Although force-modulation microscopy (FMM) is used to map the apparent elastic properties of such films with high lateral resolution in air, it has rarely been applied in aqueous media. In this letter we describe the use of FMM to map the apparent elastic propert...

The study of the ˙OOH, ˙OOCH3 and ˙OOCHCH2 radicals scavenging processes by esculetin (ES) was carried out in aqueous and lipid media, using the density functional theory. Three reaction mechanisms were considered: single electron transfer (SET), hydrogen transfer (HT) and radical adduct formation (RAF). Rate constants and branching ratios for the different paths are reported. It was found that...

A citrate stabilised silver nanoparticle (Ci-AgNP) based solvatochromic sensor, which functions as a highly selective and sensitive colorimetric probe for 1,4-dioxane in aqueous media is reported. The surfaces of the AgNPs generate reactive oxygen species, which promote the degradation of 1,4-dioxane assembled in the vicinity of the nanoparticle surfaces through charge transfer interactions. Du...

The self-assembly of amphiphilic (porphyrin)Sn 1 in an aqueous Pluronic F127 media results in the formation of narrowly dispersed nanowires. Variation of aqueous Pluronic concentrations allows for a systematic variation of porphyrin nanowire lengths while keeping their widths constant. These nanowires can be further assembled into secondary macroscopic columns.

Simple modular di- and tripeptides with a primary amine at the N-terminus catalyze the aqueous asymmetric aldol reaction between unmodified ketones and aldehydes to furnish the corresponding beta-hydroxy ketones with up to 86% ee in water and 99% ee in aqueous media.

Fluorophores that absorb and emit in the red spectral region (600-700 nm) are of great interest in photochemistry and photomedicine. Eight new target chlorins (and 19 new chlorins altogether)-analogues of chlorophyll-of different polarities have been designed and synthesized for various applications; seven of the chlorins are equipped with a bioconjugatable tether. Hydrophobic or amphiphilic ch...

Monodispersed nickel phosphide (Ni2P) nanoparticles were for the first time applied to photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from lactic acid aqueous solution under visible light LED irradiation using CdS nanorods as a photosensitizer. The system exhibited high photocatalytic hydrogen-generating activity and excellent stability in aqueous acidic media.

Photoinduced metal-mediated radical polymerization is a rapidly developing technique which allows for the synthesis of macromolecules with defined molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distributions, although typically exhibiting significant limitations in aqueous media. Herein we demonstrate that the presence of alkali metal halide salts, in conjunction with low copper concentration and...

An aqueous method for the preparation of N,S-dialkyl thiophosphoramidates is reported. Thiophosphorylation of alkylamines was performed using SPCl(3) in aqueous reaction media, and the resulting thiophosphoramidate-S-anions were S-alkylated with soft electrophiles. Ranges of amines and electrophiles were explored.

There is a pressing need for information on the mobility of nanoparticles in the complex aqueous matrices found in realistic environmental conditions. We dispersed three different metal oxide nanoparticles (TiO2, ZnO and CeO2) in samples taken from eight different aqueous media associated with seawater, lagoon, river, andgroundwater, andmeasuredtheirelectrophoretic mobility, state of aggregation, ...
