BACKGROUND To evaluate the diagnostic utility of alpha-methylacyl CoA racemase (P504S) & HMWCK (34beta E12) in morphologically difficult prostate cancer. METHODS A total of 1034 cases were reviewed and divided into benign (585) malignant (399) and suspicious (50). Immunohistochemistry with HMWCK and AMACR was done on the 50 suspicious cases along with controls. RESULTS Forty nine suspicious...
A 62-year-old male presented with symptoms of urinary obstruction and elevated serum prostate-specific antigen level of 3.61 ng/mL. Prostate needle biopsies showed benign prostatic tissue with a focus of crowded glands with minimal cytological atypia, fairly well-circumscribed with infiltrative appearance of glands at the edges. This focus had both small and larger glands with similar histologi...
In a population-based case-control study, we explored the associations between 42 polymorphisms in seven genes in this region and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) risk among Caucasian (364 cases; 380 controls) and African American (95 cases; 103 controls) women. Two TERT region SNPs, rs2075786 and rs2853677, conferred an increased risk of developing NSCLC, especially among African American wo...
Background and Aims: P504S (AMACR) is a mitochondrial enzyme expressed in renal cell carcinoma. Some of immunohistochemical markers in renal cell tumors are independent prognostic factor and show relation with histologic grading. AMACR expression increases with higher histological grading in different tumors; however, in RCC it is not obvious. In this study, we tried to investigate if ...
PURPOSE Prostatic lesions on routine staining sometimes cause a diagnostic dilemma, especially when malignant tissue is limited and is mixed with benign prostatic glands or because of the presence of benign mimickers of carcinoma. The application of immunohistochemistry contributes a valuable differential diagnosis. This study aimed to evaluate a complete spectrum of various prostatic lesions a...
Urachal adenocarcinomas are very rare and about one third of these neoplasms arise in urachal remnants. To demonstrate the origin of the urachal adenocarcinoma is not easy, but it is very important for managing patient care. We report on a 35-year-old man who complained of a palpable mass in the periumbilical area. The mass was incidentally identified 10 days earlier. Computed tomography reveal...
What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? In the era of extended biopsy sampling of the prostate, multifocal high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (HGPIN) is associated with a significantly higher rate of cancer diagnosis than unifocal HGPIN or a benign diagnosis. In addition, the cancers that are subsequently diagnosed in men with HGPIN on their initial biopsy tend to ...
BACKGROUND The pathologic distinction between high-grade prostate adenocarcinoma (PAC) involving the urinary bladder and high-grade urothelial carcinoma (UC) infiltrating the prostate can be difficult. However, making this distinction is clinically important because of the different treatment modalities for these two entities. METHODS A total of 249 patient cases (PAC, 111 cases; UC, 138 case...
α-Methylacyl-CoA racemase (AMACR; P504S) regulates branched-chain fatty acid degradation, activates Ibuprofen and is a recognised cancer drug target. A novel, facile colorimetric assay was developed based on elimination of 2,4-dinitrophenolate. The assay was used to test 5 known inhibitors, determining IC50 and Ki values, reversibility and characterizing irreversible inhibition.
