Linking taxonomic identity and functional potential at the population-level is important for the study of mixed microbial communities and is greatly facilitated by the availability of microbial reference genomes. While the culture-independent recovery of population-level genomes from environmental samples using the binning of metagenomic data has expanded available reference genome catalogs, se...

A comprehensive study of the ecophysiology of the filamentous Meganema perideroedes affiliated to the Alphaproteobacteria, possessing a "Nostocoida limicola Type II" filamentous morphology was conducted. This morphotype often causes serious bulking problems in activated sludge wastewater treatment plants, and hardly anything is known about its physiology. The study was carried out by applying a...

While sequencing DNA purified from the homoscleromorph sponge Oscarella lobularis, we detected a large number of reads with strong similarity to available alphaproteobacteria gene sequences of family Rhodobacteraceae. Here, we present the genome sequence of this putative sponge symbiont that we propose to designate as "Candidatus Rhodobacter lobularis."

Rubellimicrobium thermophilum Denner et al. 2006 is the type species of the genus Rubellimicrobium, a representative of the Roseobacter clade within the Rhodobacteraceae. Members of this clade were shown to be abundant especially in coastal and polar waters, but were also found in microbial mats and sediments. They are metabolically versatile and form a physiologically heterogeneous group withi...

Aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic (AAP) bacteria are found in a range of aquatic and terrestrial environments, potentially playing unique roles in biogeochemical cycles. Although known to occur in the Arctic Ocean, their ecology and the factors that govern their community structure and distribution in this extreme environment are poorly understood. Here, we examined summer AAP abundance and diver...

Bacteriophages are viruses that infect bacteria, and consequently they have a major impact on the development of a microbial population. In this study, the genome of a novel broad host range bacteriophage, Aquamicrobium phage P14, isolated from a wastewater treatment plant, was analyzed. The Aquamicrobium phage P14 was found to infect members of different Proteobacteria classes (Alphaproteobact...

Comparative genomic analysis was applied to identify the biotin transcriptional regulator, BioR, in most Alphaproteobacteria, and to identify its recognition signal TTATMKATAA. BioR belongs to the GntR family of transcriptional repressors. The functional assignment is supported by three lines of evidence: (1) bioR is positionally clustered with various bio genes, both for biotin biosynthesis an...
