Numerous studies have demonstrated population genetic structuring in marine species, yet few have investigated the effect of vertical zonation on gene flow and population structure. Here we use three sympatric, closely related clinid species, Clinus cottoides, C. superciliosus and Muraenoclinus dor salis, to test whether zonation on South African intertidal rocky shores affects phylogeographic ...
Organic contaminant and total mercury concentrations were compared in four species of lamniform sharks over several age classes to examine bioaccumulation patterns and gain insights into trophic ecology. Contaminants found in young of the year (YOY) sharks were assumed to be derived from maternal sources and used as a proxy to investigate factors that influence maternal offloading processes. YO...
The feather mite Plesialges mimus Trouessart, 1919, briefly described from the White-browed Babbler Pomatostomus superciliosus (Vigors & Horsfield) (Passeriformes: Pomatostomidae), is only species of genus 1919. In this work, I redescribe based on type specimens, transfer it into Hemialges 1895, and provide with valid name (Trouessart, 1919) comb. n. syn. synonymized Hemialges. A new diagno...
Laboratory work was conducted to elucidate the life cycle of the South African gnathiid isopod, Gnathia africana Barnard, 1914. The natural fish hosts of this temporary parasite, the super klipfish Clinus superciliosus (Linnaeus, 1758), were exposed to gnathiid larvae in the laboratory. It was found that G. africana has three larval stages, consisting of three unfed (zuphea) and three fed (pran...
Fishery interactions with nontarget species (including U.S. federally protected sea turtles and marine mammals) have severely impacted U.S. west coast swordfi sh, Xiphias gladius, fi sheries and have hindered the development of alternative domestic operations. This study used swordfi sh depth distribution data to aid in the design of deep-set fi shing gear to target swordfi sh in the Southern C...
The male, larva and puparium of Philornis fasciventris (Wulp) are described for the fi rst time, as well as the larval habit and host association. The material was collected in Yucatan, Mexico in a nest of the turquoise-browed motmot, Eumomota superciliosa (Sandbach) (Coraciformes: Momotidae), fi rst host record for this species. E. superciliosa is also a new host record for Philornis.
