Large-scale military deployments require transporting equipment and personnel over long distances in a short time. Planning an efficient airlift system is complicated and several models exist in the literature. Particularly, a study conducted on a deterministic optimization model developed by the Naval Postgraduate School and the RAND Corporation has shown that incorporating stochastic events l...

STUDY DESIGN Experimental laboratory study. OBJECTIVES To investigate the effect of inflation of the air bladder component of the AirLift PTTD brace on relative foot kinematics in subjects with stage II posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD). BACKGROUND Orthotic devices are commonly recommended in the conservative management of stage II PTTD to improve foot kinematics. METHODS AND MEA...

Principles of fluid mechanics, gas-liquid mass transfer, and irradiance controlled algal growth are integrated into a method for designing tubular photobioreactors in which the culture is circulated by an airlift pump. A 0.2 m(3) photobioreactor designed using the proposed approach was proved in continuous outdoor culture of the microalga Phaeodactylum tricornutum. The culture performance was a...

Conventional airlift contactor (UT-ALC) was modified to improve its performance. The modified system (CDT-ALC) was tested for gas hold-up characteristics. Hydrodynamic environment depends on gas hold-up. New system reported 50 % higher gas hold-up. Linear relation between superficial gas velocity and fractional gas hold-up were developed from experimental data for both the reactors.

The performance stability and its recovery mechanisms of a partial nitritation-anammox process were investigated. A one-stage airlift enhanced micro-granules (AEM) system was operated for 650 days continuously to treat 50 mg-NH4/L wastewater. During the stable stage, high nitrogen removal efficiency 72.7 ± 8.4% lasting 230 successfully achieved under 0.28 L/min aeration rate 0.10–0.20 mg/L diss...

Efficient allocation of aircraft and aircrews to transportation missions is an important priority at the USAF Air Mobility Command (AMC), where airlift demand must increasingly be met with less capacity and at lower cost. In addition to presenting a formidable optimization problem, the AMC resource management problem is complicated by the fact that it is situated in a continuously executing env...

We describe the formal specification and automated synthesis of a strategic airlift scheduler for the Air Mobility Command of the U. S. Air Force. The program synthesis system, the Kestrel Interactive Development System, composes a formal domain theory with a formal description of a class of algorithms (global search with constraint propagation) to produce provably correct and highly efficient ...
