We propse a new boosting algorithm that mends some of the problems that have been detected in the so far most successful boosting algorithm, AdaBoost due to Freund and Schapire [FS97]. These problems are: (1) AdaBoost cannot be used in the boosting by filtering framework, and (2) AdaBoost does not seem to be noise resistant. In order to solve them, we propose a new boosting algorithm MadaBoost ...

Boosting is a general method for improving the accuracy of any given learning algorithm. Focusing primarily on the AdaBoost algorithm, this chapter overviews some of the recent work on boosting including analyses of AdaBoost’s training error and generalization error; boosting’s connection to game theory and linear programming; the relationship between boosting and logistic regression; extension...

This paper introduces AdaBoost Dynamic, an extension of AdaBoost.M1 algorithm by Freund and Shapire. In this extension we use different “weak” classifiers in subsequent iterations of the algorithm, instead of AdaBoost’s fixed base classifier. The algorithm is tested with various datasets from UCI database, and results show that the algorithm performs equally well as AdaBoost with the best possi...

The classification of data with imbalanced class distributions has posed a significant drawback in the performance attainable by most well-developed classification systems, which assume relatively balanced class distributions. This problem is especially crucial in many application domains, such as medical diagnosis, fraud detection, network intrusion, etc., which are of great importance in mach...

Abstract This paper proposes a new method to improve performance of AdaBoost by using a distance weight function to increase the accuracy of its machine learning processes. The proposed distance weight algorithm improves classification in areas where the original binary classifier is weak. This paper derives the new algorithm’s optimal solution, and it demonstrates how classifier accuracy can b...

Support Vector Machines (SVMs) and Adaptive Boosting (AdaBoost) are two successful classification methods. They are essentially the same as they both try to maximize the minimal margin on a training set. In this work, we present an even platform to compare these two learning algorithms in terms of their test error, margin distribution and generalization power. Two basic models of polynomials an...

In this note, we discuss the boosting algorithm AdaBoost and identify two of its main drawbacks: it cannot be used in the boosting by ltering framework and it is not noise resistant. In order to solve them, we propose a modiication of the weighting system of AdaBoost. We prove that the new algorithm is in fact a boosting algorithm under the condition that the sequence of advantages generated by...

In order to understand AdaBoost’s dynamics, especially its ability to maximize margins, we derive an associated simplified nonlinear iterated map and analyze its behavior in low-dimensional cases. We find stable cycles for these cases, which can explicitly be used to solve for AdaBoost’s output. By considering AdaBoost as a dynamical system, we are able to prove Rätsch and Warmuth’s conjecture ...

We describe an automatic procedure for building risk maps of unexploded ordnances (UXO) based on historic air photographs. The system is based on a cost-sensitive version of AdaBoost regularized by hard point shaving techniques, and integrated by spatial smoothing. The result is a map of the spatial density of craters, an indicator of UXO risk.

Discuss approaches to combine techniques used by ensemble learning methods. Randomness which is used by Bagging and Random Forests is introduced into Adaboost to get robust performance under noisy situation. Declare that when the randomness introduced into AdaBoost equals to 100, the proposed algorithm turns out to be a Random Forests with weight update technique. Approaches are discussed to im...
