The accretion disc eclipse mapping method is an astrotomographic inversion technique that makes use of the information contained in eclipse light curves to probe the structure, the spectrum and the time evolution of accretion discs in cataclysmic variables. This paper presents examples of eclipse mapping results that have been key to improve our understanding of accretion physics.
We use the grid of hydrodynamic accretion disc calculations of Stehle (1999) to construct orbital phase dependent emission line profiles of thin discs carrying spiral density waves. The observational signatures of spiral waves are explored to establish the feasibility of detecting spiral waves in cataclysmic variable discs using prominent emission lines in the visible range of the spectrum. For...
Two-dimensional models of layered protoplanetary discs – II. The effect of a residual viscosity in the dead zone. ABSTRACT We study axisymmetric models of layered protoplanetary discs taking radiative transfer effects into account, and allowing for a residual viscosity in the dead zone. We also explore the effect of different viscosity prescriptions. In addition to the ring instability reported...
We present steady-state calculations of self-similar magnetized accretion discs driving cold, adiabatic, non-relativistic jets. For the first time, both the magnetic torque due to the jets and a turbulent “viscous” torque are taken into account. This latter torque allows a dissipation of the accretion power as radiation at the disc surfaces, while the former predominantly provides jets with pow...
Self-organised criticality (SOC) has been suggested as a potentially powerful unifying paradigm for interpreting the structure of, and signals from, accretion systems. After reviewing the most promising sites where SOC might be observable, we consider the theoretical arguments for supposing that SOC can occur in accretion discs. Perhaps the most rigorous evidence is provided by numerical modell...
This is a doctorate level lecture on the physics of accretion discs driving magnetically self-confined jets, usually referred to in the literature as disc winds. I will first review the governing magnetohydrodynamic equations and then discuss their physical content. At that level, necessary conditions to drive jets from keplerian accretion discs can already be derived. These conditions are vali...
We have found the first convincing evidence for spiral structure in the accretion disc of a close binary. The eclipsing dwarf nova binary IP Peg, observed during the end phase of a rise to outburst, shows strong Balmer and Helium emission lines in its spectra, with asymmetric double peaked velocity profiles produced in the accretion disc around the white dwarf. To reveal the two armed spiral on...
