The autosomal recessive transmission of Glanzmann's thrombasthenia (GT) and Bernard-Soulier syndrome (BSS), together with requests of families who already had children with these diseases, prompted us to investigate the feasibility of their antenatal diagnosis. The preliminary step leading to the early detection of GT or BSS was to characterize, in the normal human fetus, the platelet antigens ...

Recently Ménard et al. (hereafter MSFR) detected a subtle but systematic change in the mean color of quasars as a function of their projected separation from foreground galaxies, extending to comoving separations of ∼ 10h−1Mpc, which they interpret as a signature of reddening by intergalactic dust. We present theoretical models of this remarkable observation, using smoothed particle hydrodynami...

The aim of this investigation was to characterize the pattern of cervical myoelectrical activity (EMG) in the sheep, during the periovulatory period, after synchronization of oestrus with progestagen and eCG. EMG was measured with a computerised modular system in five ewes previously fitted with a pair of monopolar Teflon needle electrodes in the muscle layers of the cervix. Each ewe was submit...

We investigate the clustering of galaxies in the QDOT redshift survey of IRAS galaxies. We find that the two-point correlation function is well approximated by a powerlaw of slope −1.11±0.09, with clustering length 3.87±0.32h−1 Mpc* out to pair separations of ∼ 25h Mpc. On scales larger than ∼ 40h Mpc, the correlation function is consistent with zero. The rms fluctuation in the count of QDOT ga...

Background and purpose : Ënergy sources play an important role in preimplantation development. Ëffect of glucose, an importamt energy source, has been studied in different stages of embryo development. Ënergy sources play important role in embryos development in preimplantation peroid. Glucose is one of the main sources of energy supply, and it’s effect has been studied in different stages of...

We study the formation of galaxies in a large volume (50h Mpc, 2 × 288 particles) cosmological simulation, evolved using the entropy and energy conserving smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) code Gadget-2. Most of the baryonic mass in galaxies of all masses is originally acquired through filamentary “cold mode” accretion of gas that was never shock heated to its halo virial temperature, confi...

This morning's debate is focused on the question of the large-scale homo-geneity of the Universe. I shall present the aarmative position, that there is overwhelming evidence for large scale homogeneity on scales in excess of approximately 50h ?1 Mpc, with a fractal distribution of matter on smaller scales. My worthy opponent, Dr. Luciano Pietronero, will present the counter-argument, that the f...

Sub-arcsecond images, taken in B, R, and Hα filters, and area spectroscopy obtained with the WIYN 3.5-m telescope provide the basis for an investigation of the unusual structures in the stellar body and ionized gas in and around the Perseus cluster central galaxy, NGC 1275. Our Hα filter is tuned to gas at the velocity of NGC 1275, revealing complex, probably unresolved, small-scale features in...

We present a detailed comparison of mass measurements for clusters of galaxies using ASCA and ROSAT X-ray data and constraints from strong and weak gravitational lensing. Our results, for a sample of thirteen clusters (including six with massive cooling flows, five without cooling flows, and two intermediate systems) provide a consistent description of the distribution of gravitating matter in ...

We analyze optical spectra of a sample of 502 galaxies in close pairs and n-tuples, separated by ≤ 50h−1kpc. We extracted the sample objectively from the CfA2 redshift survey, without regard to the surroundings of the tight systems; we re-measure the spectra with longer exposures, to explore the spectral characteristics of the galaxies. We use the new spectra to probe the relationship between s...
