Darwin-Foldy nuclear-size corrections in electronic atoms and nuclear radii are discussed from the nuclear-physics perspective. Interpretation of precise isotope-shift measurements is formalism dependent, and care must be exercised in interpreting these results and those obtained from relativistic electron scattering from nuclei. We strongly advocate that the entire nuclear-charge operator be u...

Use of stable isotope ratios to trace pathways of organic matter among consumers requires knowledge of the isotopic shift between diet and consumer. Variation in trophic shift among consumers can be substantial. For data from the published literature and supplementary original data (excluding fluid-feeding consumers), the mean isotopic shift for C was +0.5 0.13‰ rather than 0.0‰, as commonly as...

We present an accurate ab initio method of calculating transition energies and isotope shifts in the 3d-transition metals. It extends previous work that combines the configuration-interaction calculation with many-body perturbation theory by including the effective three-body interaction and modification of the energy denominator. We show that these effects are of importance in Ti II. The need ...

We report the iron (Fe) isotope effect on the transition temperature (T(c)) in oxygen-deficient SmFeAsO(1-y), a 50-K-class, Fe-based superconductor. For the optimally doped samples with T(c) = 54  K, a change of the average atomic mass of Fe (M(Fe)) causes a negligibly small shift in T(c), with the Fe isotope coefficient (α(Fe)) as small as -0.024 ± 0.015 (where α(Fe)=-d lnT(c)/dlnM(Fe)). This ...

Bacteria grow and transform elements at different rates, and as yet, quantifying this variation in the environment is difficult. Determining isotope enrichment with fine taxonomic resolution after exposure to isotope tracers could help, but there are few suitable techniques. We propose a modification to stable isotope probing (SIP) that enables the isotopic composition of DNA from individual ba...

We present an ab initio method of calculation of isotope shift in atoms with a few valence electrons, based on the configuration-interaction calculation of energy. The main motivation for developing the method comes from the need to analyze whether differences in isotope abundance in early universe can contribute to the observed anomalies in quasar absorption spectra. The current best explanati...

The 4d S0 ground-state transitions to the 4d 9 5p configuration of palladium (Pd) have been studied. For this purpose, a tunable, single-mode, deep-UV cw laser has been built to generate the sum frequency of a frequency-doubled Ti:S laser with a second Ti:S laser. The produced wavelengths range from 244 to 276 nm. From the measured spectra the frequency splitting due to hyperfine structure and ...

Weak satellites of the strong and sharp parity-forbidden, but symmetry-allowed 1s(A1)→1s(T2) doublet of the S donor spectrum in silicon are reported. The low-energy ones are ascribed to a Si isotope effect and the high-energy ones to an S isotope effect. We also show that the profile of the low-energy component of the same transition of Se in silicon can be reproduced from the computed combinat...

Atomic energy levels are commonly evaluated assuming that the nuclear mass is infinite. In this report, we consider corrections to atomic levels associated with finite nuclear mass. These corrections are referred to as isotope shifts. We evaluate isotope shifts using many-body perturbation theory (MBPT), following the pioneering work by Mårtensson-Pendrill et al. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9]. We...
