We investigated peste des petits ruminants (PPR) infection in cattle and wildlife in northern Tanzania. No wildlife from protected ecosystems were seropositive. However, cattle from villages where an outbreak had occurred among small ruminants showed high PPR seropositivity, indicating that spillover infection affects cattle. Thus, cattle could be of value for PPR serosurveillance.

The aim of this study was to compare a patient cohort after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in terms of the revision rate and the functional outcome, with and without patella resurfacing. Sixty-six patients (71 TKAs) were implanted with the mobile-bearing knee prosthesis system e.motion UC (Aesculap AG, Tuttlingen, Germany). These patients were divided into 2 groups, 1 of which received primary p...

In developing murine growth plates, chondrocytes near the articular surface (periarticular chondrocytes) proliferate, differentiate into flat column-forming proliferating cells (columnar chondrocytes), stop dividing and finally differentiate into hypertrophic cells. Indian hedgehog (Ihh), which is predominantly expressed in prehypertrophic cells, stimulates expression of parathyroid hormone (PT...

Because a physician’s primary professional obligation is to promote the welfare of the patients directly under his or her care, the patient-physician relationship (PPR) is the irreplaceable cornerstone of medical practice. A PPR is formed when a patient seeks medical help and a physician responds by providing medical service, including giving an opinion, making a diagnosis, or treating the pati...

An outbreak of peste des petits ruminants (PPR) was recorded in Kalubia province, Egypt in 2006, affecting a large population of migratory goats and sheep over a huge geographical area. Epidemiological, clinical and laboratory investigations were performed. Diseased animals showed pyrexia, erosive stomatitis, enteritis and bronchopneumonia. Clinical manifestations were more severe in goats. The...

Negative phototaxis in Natronomonas pharaonis is initiated by transient interaction changes between photoreceptor and transducer. pharaonis phoborhodopsin (ppR; also called pharaonis sensory rhodopsin II, psR-II) and the cognate transducer protein, pHtrII, form a tight 2 : 2 complex in the unphotolyzed state, and the interaction is somehow altered during the photocycle of ppR. We have studied t...

As a large family of RNA-binding proteins, pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR) proteins mediate multiple aspects of RNA metabolism in eukaryotes. Binding to their target single-stranded RNAs (ssRNAs) in a modular and base-specific fashion, PPR proteins can serve as designable modules for gene manipulation. However, the structural basis for nucleotide-specific recognition by designer PPR (dPPR) prote...

Dental root formation is a dynamic process in which mesenchymal cells migrate toward the site of the future root, differentiate and secrete dentin and cementum. However, the identities of dental mesenchymal progenitors are largely unknown. Here we show that cells expressing osterix are mesenchymal progenitors contributing to all relevant cell types during morphogenesis. The majority of cells ex...

Pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR) proteins are sequence-specific RNA-binding proteins that form a pervasive family of proteins conserved in yeast, plants, and humans. The plant PPR proteins are grouped mainly into the P and PLS classes. Here, we report the crystal structure of a PLS-class PPR protein from Arabidopsis thaliana called THA8L (THA8-like) at 2.0 Å. THA8L resembles THA8 (thylakoid assem...

Although a large number of microRNAs (miRNAs) have been identified in different plant species, the functional roles and targets of the majority of miRNAs have not yet been determined. Here, Arabidopsis thaliana miRNA400 (miR400) was investigated for its functional role in the defense response to diverse pathogens. Transgenic Arabidopsis plants that overexpress MIR400 (35S::MIR400) displayed muc...
