Four new hydroporphyrins [the o, m and p isomers of 5,10,15,20-tetra(hydroxyphenyl)chlorin and 5,10,15,20-tetra(m-hydroxyphenyl)bacteriochlorin] related to the tetra(hydroxyphenyl)porphyrins have been prepared. They show the expected strong absorption bands in the red region of the visible spectrum and are found to be very effective tumour photosensitizers.

A high performance three-dimensional (3D) thiophene-annulated perylene dye, namely tetra-PBI-S, was designed and synthesized. The appropriate LUMO level, balanced carrier mobilities and favourable phase separation make tetra-PBI-S based solar cells show a much higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.2% than tetra-PBI based solar cells with a PCE of 3.6%.

The title compound, (C(24)H(20)P)(2)[MnI(4)]·(CH(3))(2)CO, prepared from the reaction of manganese powder, iodine and tetra-phenyl-phospho-nium iodide in acetone shows a tetra-hedral complex anion [Mn-I = 2.6868 (5)-2.7281 (4) Å and I-Mn-I = 104.011 (13)-116.164 (15)°], two tetra-phenyl-phospho-nium cations and one mol-ecule of acetone.
