Viridans group streptococcus is an infrequent cause of osteomyelitis that is found in association with infective endocarditis. Only a few studies report viridans osteomyelitis in the absence of endocarditis. Vertebral pyogenic osteomyelitis can sometimes be complicated by psoas or paraspinal abscesses. These intra-abdominal and/or pelvic collections can very rarely result in venous thrombosis. ...

A 39-year-old African American man with no significant past medical history presented to our hospital with right hand weakness and pain in both arms. He had no fever, neck pain, headache, dizziness, vision changes, or weakness in his lower extremities. Magnetic resonance imaging of the cervical spine showed extensive abnormal enhancement of the C7-T1 vertebral bodies as well as the prevertebral...

Osteomyelitis is an infection of the bone that can involve the vertebral column. A rare cause of vertebral osteomyelitis is Mycobacterium bovis after intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) therapy for transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder. In this report, we describe the case of a 64-year-old male presenting with constitutional symptoms, progressive thoracic kyphosis, and intractable ...

The clinical course of a patient with vertebral osteomyelitis caused by Peptostreptococcus micros is described. The organism was isolated on two occasions from lumbar vertebral biopsies and was visualized in histologic sections of one of the biopsies. The patient had no apparent infections at other body sites. The infection was eradicated after 6 weeks of intravenous clindamycin therapy.

A retrospective study showed musculoskeletal manifestations in 32 of 108 patients treated for infective endocarditis in several departments at the Poitiers CHU. Such manifestations included articular pain or aseptic arthritis, typically involving the major joints, as well as vertebral osteomyelitis, low back pain (inflammatory or non-inflammatory), and myalgia. Patients showing such signs were ...

The importance and role of computed tomography (CT) are discussed on the basis of 36 cases of vertebral osteomyelitis. The bone images themselves, the detection of lumbar disk hypodensity, and the exploration of soft paraspinal regions in the search for an abscess are factors that contribute to the superiority of this method in difficult cases. In cases where the diagnosis is already known, CT ...

We describe the case of a 67-year-old male with liver cirrhosis who presented with fever and neck pain. Magnetic resonance imaging of the spine detected cervical vertebral osteomyelitis, and enhanced CT of the neck and spine revealed retropharyngeal abscess. The patient was treated with empirical antimicrobial therapy and surgical drainage due to significant airway involvement. Escherichia coli...

We have reviewed 60 patients with primary bone infections; 21 of these (35%) had subacute osteomyelitis, a figure which supports other recent observations that this variant of bone infection is becoming more widespread. In this group open culture and biopsy were necessary in order to exclude bony malignancy, and a raised erythrocyte sedimentation rate proved a useful diagnostic aid. All the pat...

Vertebral osteomyelitis is a serious debilitating infection if not detected early. Involvement of cervical vertebrae is usually seen in the presence of specific risk factors. Urinary tract infection commonly spreads to the lumbar vertebrae. This is a case presentation of an elderly male who, in the absence of specific risk factors for cervical osteomyelitis, presented with symptoms of urinary t...
