Microelectrodes fabricated using integrated-circuit technology are shown to be suitable for extracellular single-unit recording, and the factors influencing electrode-cell coupling are discussed. Electrode tip size as well as location is found to be critical in recording high spike amplitudes, suggesting that the paths for current flow in central nervous system (CNS) tissue may be extremely small.

A new micropositioner design for use in chronic, transdural single unit recording studies is presented. The adapter is used to position an electrode microdrive assembly to any desired location within a surgically implanted recording chamber. The adapter uses a radial positioning technique that requires few moving parts. In comparison with the X-Y slide manipulator it replaces, it is more durabl...

The macro electromyography method was developed in the 1980s. Since then, technical modifications have been made, and a number of conditions have been explored. This study is a methodological introduction and an update of findings in some nerve–muscle disorders. The spike component of a motor unit potential (MUP) recorded by a concentric or monopolar needle electromyography (EMG) electrode is g...

A preparation was developed that allows for the recording of single-unit chemoreceptor activity from mouse carotid body in vitro. An anesthetized mouse was decapitated, and each carotid body was harvested, along with the sinus nerve, glossopharyngeal nerve, and petrosal ganglia. After exposure to collagenase/trypsin, the cleaned complex was transferred to a recording chamber where it was superf...

This paper describes a detailed protocol for obtaining chronic, multi-site unit recordings in cerebral cortex of awake animals for periods of three months or more. The protocol includes details for making relatively simple and inexpensive implantable multichannel electrodes that consist of arrays of separate microwires. The results reported in this paper suggest that a viable implant will have ...

Parallel recording of neuronal activity in the behaving animal is a prerequisite for our understanding of neuronal representation and storage of information. Here we describe the development of micro-machined silicon microelectrode arrays for unit and local field recordings. The two-dimensional probes with 96 or 64 recording sites provided high-density recording of unit and field activity with ...
