Fluorescent nanorods formed by self-assembly of hexaphenylbenzene derivative in the presence of cyanide ions serve as a sensitive colorimetric and fluorogenic sensor for the detection of trinitrotoluene (TNT) at the attogram (10(-18) g) level with a detection limit of 10.21 ppq (parts per quadrillion).

A simple selective etching process easily removed a 2nd anodized TiO(2) nanotubes (TNTs) layer from a physically stable 1st anodized TNTs layer to produce noncurling, freestanding, large-area aligned doubly open-ended TNTs. These TNTs were easily transferred to a conducting glass for use in fabricating front-illuminated dye sensitized solar cells.

A bacterial strain, Mycobacterium sp. strain HL 4-NT-1, enriched with 4-nitrotoluene as its sole source of nitrogen, was able to metabolize 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene under aerobic conditions. The dark red-brown metabolite, which accumulated in the culture fluid, was identified as a hydride-Meisenheimer complex by comparison with an authentic synthetic sample.
