Only a few studies have compared the muscle distribution of the different Trichinella genotypes. In this study, data were obtained from a series of experimental infections in pigs, wild boars, foxes and horses, with the aim of evaluating the predilection sites of nine well-defined genotypes of Trichinella. Necropsy was performed at 5, 10, 20 and 40 weeks post inoculation. From all host species,...

Studying parasites of the genus Trichinella provides scientists of today many advantages. This is a group of zoonotic nematodes that circulates freely among wildlife hosts with one in particular, Trichinella spiralis that is exceptionally well adapted to domestic swine. Recent reports suggest that human infections from hunted animals are on the rise worldwide and numerous countries still experi...

Pastured pigs are vulnerable to Trichinella spiralis infection through exposure to wild reservoir hosts. To evaluate the potential impact of the expanding production of pork from pasture-raised pigs, we mapped locations of T. spiralis occurrence and pastured-pig farms in the United States. Twenty-eight farms were located within 50 km of previous infection.

Hunting in Poland has a long tradition and became more popular after 1990. Each year over 60,000 wild boar are hunted. Some of them may act as Trichinella carriers thus all carcasses of wild boar are systematically sampled in game-handling establishments as part of the post-mortem examination. The aim of the study was to determine the species of Trichinella and to evaluate the year to year diff...

Experiments were carried out to ascertain whether the acute inflammatory phase of the intestinal response of hamsters to infection with Trichinella spiralis would adversely affect hookworms in concurrently infected animals. The survival and growth of hookworms were unaffected. However, the presence of hookworms reduced the establishment of T. spiralis, the initial growth of female worms and the...

To elucidate the roles of IgE antibody in host responses to helminth infection, selective IgE-deficient SJA/9 mice were infected with the nematode parasites Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, which elicits remarkable potentiated IgE production, and Trichinella spiralis, which induces strong anti-Trichinella IgE antibody production in normal mice. The kinetics of blood eosinophilia, worm burden after...

In experiments in which guinea pigs were infected concurrently with the virus of lymphocytic choriomeningitis and the parasitic nematode, Trichinella spiralis, proof was obtained that trichinella larvae, after maturation in the muscles, had acquired the virus and were capable of transmitting it to new susceptible hosts. Transmission resulted both when living larvae were fed to normal guinea pig...

We developed a detection system for myogenic regulatory factors such as MyoD and myogenin. Adapting the method we performed a longitudinal analysis of such regulatory factors after infection with T. spiralis and T. pseudospiralis. MyoD and myogenin were expressed from the early phase of cystogenesis in T. spiralis infection. The expression returned to the normal level after 18 days from the inf...
