On page 2057, a Lewis acid porous carbon material with tunable hydrophilicity is prepared by temperature controlled pyrolysis of Al based metal-organic frameworks, by C.-H. Lin, H.-Y. Huang, S. Ma, and co-workers. This porous carbon highlights its low heat capacity, and high water uptake, which acts as efficient laser-absorbing matrix/sorbent for detecting trace levels of target compounds.

Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) was first introduced in the late 1960s as an instrumental technique for the detection of trace quantities of gaseous organic compounds at atmospheric pressure. The development of mobility theory and the emerging analytical applications for IMS were later discussed by FW Karasek [1] and researchers continued to gather fundamental data about this technique and the ...

The optimum value of trace minerals is how well they can serve their biological function in an animal’s body. For trace minerals to keep an animal in good health and performing to their genetic potential, they have to be available for absorption in the small intestines. There are a multitude of compounds and factors that will interact with individual trace minerals that have the potential to re...

Hundreds of organic chemicals are used during natural gas extraction via high-volume hydraulic fracturing (HVHF). However, it is unclear whether these chemicals, injected into deep shale horizons, reach shallow groundwater aquifers and affect local water quality, either from those deep HVHF injection sites or from the surface or shallow subsurface. Here, we report detectable levels of organic c...

Chlorinated organic compounds, prevalent contaminants found in the geo-environment, pose an ecological risk even at trace concentrations. More volatile chlorinated compounds such as VOCs (volatile organic compounds) have been detected in urban areas and industrial zones because of the use of these compounds as components of industrial solvents and both raw and intermediate synthetic products. C...

Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry using atmospheric pressure ionization is dramatically changing the analytical methods, potential and tasks of water analysis. The present status in applying this technique to organic as well as inorganic water constituents and its use in the context of wastewater treatment and drinking water preparation is reviewed. Separation techniques such as reversed-...

Among the trace elements, arsenic appears to possess a unique position in the environment. When comparing terrestrial and marine organisms there seems to be a significant difference between both level and chemical forms of arsenic. The level of arsenic in terrestrial organisms is seldom above 1 ppm (dry material) whereas the corresponding values for marine organisms vary from several parts per ...
