The standard approach for integrating the multidimensional Vlasov equation using grid based, conservative schemes is based on a time splitting approach. Here, we show that although the truncation error is of second order, time splitting can introduce systematic heating of the plasma. We introduce a backsubstitution method, which not only avoids this deficiency but also is computationally less e...

We provide a new analytical approach to operator splitting for equations of the type ut = Au + B(u) where A is a linear operator and B is quadratic. A particular example is the Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation ut−uux +uxxx = 0. We show that the Godunov and Strang splitting methods converge with the expected rates if the initial data are sufficiently regular.

We analyze operator splitting methods applied to scalar equations with a nonlinear advection operator, and a linear (local or nonlocal) diffusion operator or a linear dispersion operator. The advection velocity is determined from the scalar unknown itself and hence the equations are so-called active scalar equations. Examples are provided by the surface quasi-geostrophic and aggregation equatio...

The computation of velocity eld, pressure, temperature distribution and mass fraction functions that are coupled in a nonlinear PDE describing chemically reacting ows is a challenging task since computational resources are limited. Implicit solution ansatzes of the coupled quantities require a vast amount of storage capacities that is lacking on normal workstations to resolve complex ow structu...

Abstract: We consider three level difference replacements of parabolic equations focusing on the heat equation in two space dimensions. Through a judicious splitting of the approximation, the scheme qualifies as an alternating direction implicit (ADI) method. Using the well known fact of the parabolic-elliptic correspondence, we shall derive a two stage iterative procedure employing a fractiona...

We consider for the integration of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations with periodic plane wave solutions a splitting method from the class of symplectic integrators and the multi-symplectic six-point scheme which is equivalent to the Preissman scheme. The numerical experiments show that both methods preserve very well the mass, energy and momentum in long-time evolution. The local errors i...
