The management of occult small thyroid nodules found by ultrasonography is sometimes problematic. Self-palpation may be utilized in the follow-up of these nodules. We developed a method of thyroid self-examination (TSE). We examined the size of the nodules palpable by this method by ultrasonography. In 78 patients examined, all 38 tumors more than 2 cm in size, whereas only one of 14 tumors les...
Thyroid gland disorders include benign and malignant thyroid nodules and diffuse thyroid disorders. The incidence of malignant thyroid nodules is low and the prognosis is good. The diagnosis of thyroid cancer and diffuse parenchymal disorders is generally based on clinical manifestations and histopathological evaluation. Ultrasonography has its place in the diagnostics and follow-up of thyroid ...
The effects of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) deficiency on thyroid development was examined using ultrasonography in a child with congenital isolated TSH deficiency. Ultrasound revealed the thyroid gland was one sixth normal volume, suggesting that TSH plays an important part in thyroid growth, but not a critical role in differentiation.
BACKGROUND Ultrasonography of cortical and cingulum maturity patterns, were studied in newborns and infants with congenital hypothyroidism (CH). METHOD Transversal study of 29 newborns and infants with CH, detected by neonatal screening and confirmed with thyroid function test, thyroid ultrasonography, and thyroid scintigraphy. During the first 2 months of life, transfontanelar brain ultrason...
The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of neck ultrasonography compared to (131)I whole-body scan (WBS) and circulating thyroglobulin (Tg) measurement after thyroid hormone withdrawal in the follow-up of children with thyroid papillary cancer, who had previously undergone total thyroidectomy for the diagnosis of neck lymph node metastases (LNM). Forty-five children were examined. Neck u...
Objective: The high incidence of non-organ specific autoantibodies in patients with mitral valve prolapse (MVP) may suggest an association between MVP and autoimmune diseases. A higher incidence of MVP in patients with chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis and Graves’ disease has been demonstrated in various studies. In particular, an increased incidence of MVP in patients with autoimmune thyroid dis...
PURPOSE To assess the incidence of thyroid malignancy in an adult population screened by high-resolution ultrasonography at a medical screening center and to compare the clinical and pathological features of screen-detected thyroid carcinomas to symptomatic overt thyroid carcinomas. MATERIALS AND METHODS We calculated the prevalence of screen-detected thyroid cancer at a medical screening cen...
This is a rare case of metastatic follicular carcinoma of thyroid in a patient with no history of thyroid problem. A frontal bone mass was examined microscopically and showed the pattern of metastatic follicular carcinoma. Thyroid ultrasonography then revealed a nodule in left lobe. Total thyroidectomy was done for the patient and microscopic examination confirmed the diagnosis.
Abstract Background : Iatrogenic recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury is an uncommon but serious complication of Head and neck surgery and also thoracic procedures. laryngoscopy can be an invasive and uncomfortable procedure, therefore the use of sonography as an noninvasive method of screening patients for impaired vocal-cord mobility is desirable. The aim of this study was to assess ...
