I examine the implications of technological catch-up by developing countries (the South). With Southern catchup, production of unskilled-intensive goods moves South. Because the improved terms of trade fully offsets the income lost by having production migrate South, the North benefits. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Example 1. In a genetic study, n = 2217 patients are recruited, among which 1127 have bladder cancer. After whole genome sequencing, p = 475290 single nucleatide polymorphisms (or SNPs, a possible variation of the DNA sequence at one location) are measured on each patient. We construct a matrix X = (Xij)1≤i≤n,1≤j≤p where Xij = 1 if the ith patient has a mutation at jth location and 0 otherwise....

Catch-up growth, defined as growth velocity above the statistical limits of normality for age or maturity during a defined period of time, is distinguished from compensatory growth since it makes up for a potential loss rather than an actual loss and is seen in the whole body as opposed to specific organs. The cellular explanation for catch-up based on the work of Winick is described and a rece...

This paper analyzes the evolution of policies for technology catch-up through three periods: the import substitution period, the (augmented) Washington Consensus period and the post-Washington period. We analyze the dominant policy models and practices in each of these periods as co-evolving with the dominant academic ideas, thereby changing the conditions for catching up. We develop several di...

This study examines why compact organizational space may matter for technological catch-up, through a comparison of China’s leading automotive groups. The comparative analysis demonstrates that the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) surpasses its two local rivals in terms of technological capabilities partly because the firm has managed its organizational space in close connection ...

Since 1950, there has been considerable diversity in developing country experiences. Some countries and some regions have experienced rapid growth and catch up, others have fallen behind. At a global level there is an increasing inequality of per capita incomes. However, within the framework of increasing inequality, some countries have experienced accelerated catch up. The speed of catch up in...

Linkages between industry and university have become crucial for knowledge discovery and driving industrialization within fast-paced global competition and technological evolution. This study offers a pair-wise cross-case analysis of the transitioning of Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) and Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) to become entrepreneurial universities through the Co...

Does the mobility of engineers facilitate international knowledge spillovers and help newly industrializing countries catch up with developed countries? This study attempts to answer this question by tracing knowledge flows through the international mobility of semiconductor engineers. The paper uses patent data to track the mobility paths of engineers to examine whether knowledge flows were gr...

Recent studies on economic and technological transformation in less developed countries emphasise that improvement of their performance in terms of competitiveness and successful integration into the world economy requires both economic stabilisation at the macroeconomic level and technological development. Greece is a typical case, which during the last twenty years has had to deal with specif...
