To study the protective effects of maternal thyroxine (T4) and 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T3) in congenital hypothyroidism, we gave pregnant rats methimazole (MMI), an antithyroid drug that crosses the placenta, and infused them with three different doses of T4 or T3. The concentrations of both T4 and T3 were determined in maternal and fetal plasma and tissues (obtained near term) by specific RIA...

Tocotrienol (T3) is an unsaturated vitamin E having health benefits (e.g., anti-angiogenesis). We measured T3 in commercial eggs, and developed T3-fortified eggs by adding rice bran scum oil (RBO, containing 1.3% T3) to the feed. Commercial eggs contained about 0.11 mg of T3/egg, while the T3 content was improved to 0.62 mg/egg after RBO supplementation to the feed of hens for 7 d.

The local conversion of thyroxine (T4), which is an important source of intracellular 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T3) in several rat tissues, has been subject of recent investigations. In the present study the regulation of this phenomenon in vivo was investigated in various peripheral tissues of the rat. Intact euthyroid and radiothyroidectomized (Tx) rats received a continuous intravenous infusi...

The present study was designed to compare the Thyopac and Triosorb triiodothyronine uptake tests. A normal range was established for the two procedures. Neither test was affected by iodine-containing drugs or contrast media but abnormal results were obtained during pregnancy and in subjects receiving oestrogens. Both tests proved satisfactory in the diagnosis of hypo- and hyperthyroidism, givin...

Simultaneous advances in detector technology and solid-phase separation systems, as well as the availability of powerful desktop computers, have made possible the development of "second-generation" solid-phase immunoassays. These retain the advantages of classical solid phase while significantly accelerating reaction kinetics. Hapten assays--such as for digoxin, thyroxin, and triiodothyronine u...

Thyroxine-binding prealbumin (TBPA) in normal human serum has been shown in a polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis system to bind 7-9% of tracer level purified [(125)I]triiodothyronine (T3), and more than 30% of T3 in serum deficient in thyroxinebinding globulin (TBG). The T3-TBPA interaction has been confirmed at pH 9.0 and pH 7.4 in this electrophoretic demonstration of TBPA binding of T3 in se...

Decreased serum T3 concentrations in elderly subjects and their possible relationship with the development of dementia have been indicated. To see the effects of a passive increase in the serum T3 concentration, low dose T3 administration was undertaken. Forty-four subjects from 65 to 93 years of age (average 81.0 +/- 7.8) were divided into 2 groups. The grade of dementia was determined by Hase...

Thyroid hormone has a broad effect on cardiovascular system. 3,3',5-triiodo-l-thyronine (T3), a biologically active form of thyroid hormone, increases cardiac contractility. T3 causes arterial relaxation and reduction of systemic vascular resistance, resulting in an increase in cardiac output. However, the molecular mechanisms of vascular relaxation by T3 are incompletely characterized. We stud...

t4 and t3, two major hormones of thyroid gland, are responsible for regulation of “basal metabolism” in the body. thyroid function is regulated primarily by variation in the pituitary tsh. in this study, about four hundred individuals were considered from four iranian populations. they were selected randomly in their cities; shiraz, mashhad, rasht, and ilam. essential family information was ask...
