This paper discusses a case of syntax/semantics interaction of a characteristically optimality-theoretic kind. Finnish partitive constructions exhibit a case alternation that is partly semantically, partly syntactically driven. The crucial semantic condition that plays a role in case selection is quantitative determinacy, which replaces the de niteness condition familiar from the Partitive Cons...
Considering the speed in which humans resolve syntactic ambiguity, and the overwhelming evidence that syntactic ambiguity is resolved through selection of the analysis whose interpretation is the most ‘sensible’, one comes to the conclusion that interpretation, hence parsing take place incrementally, just about every word. Considerations of parsimony in the theory of the syntactic processor lea...
Syntax is one of the components in the architecture of language processing that allows the listener/reader to bind single-word information into a unified interpretation of multiword utterances. This paper discusses ERP effects that have been observed in relation to syntactic processing. The fact that these effects differ from the semantic N400 indicates that the brain honors the distinction bet...
Introduction NPs like other constituents generally have syntactic functions that are associated with specific interpretations. They may not only have one such semantically relevant syntactic function, but also a combination of them. Syntacticians have traditionally directed their attention to only a certain number of semantically relevant syntactic functions of NPs, in particular to the status ...
A Computational Model of Syntactic Processing Ambiguity Resolution from Interpretation Michael Niv Mark J Steedman Supervisor Syntactic ambiguity abounds in natural language yet humans have no di culty coping with it In fact the process of ambiguity resolution is almost always unconscious But it is not infallible however as example demonstrates The horse raced past the barn fell This sentence i...
During natural speech perception, listeners rely on a wide range of cues to support comprehension, from semantic context to prosodic information. There is a general consensus that prosody plays a role in syntactic parsing, but most studies focusing on ambiguous relative clauses (RC) show that prosodic cues, alone, are insufficient to reverse the preferred interpretation of sentence. These findi...
This paper presents a novel account of Differential Object Marking as an instance case assigned by post-syntactic Agree-Case operation that transduces agreement relations established in the syntax marking goal rather than probe. In this sense, it is modern interpretation Nichols' (1986) Head-Marking and Dependent dichotomy. Analyzing intricate details Markin Kashmiri, I show not all but some no...
This paper aims to analyze the interpretation of vocatives and cat[1]egory vocativeness within school subject Croatian language regarding phonetic, phonological morphological, syntactic, orthographic pragmat[1]ic-semantic vocative features on corpus contemporary lan[1]guage textbooks for primary secondary education selected according final result selection from “Catalog approved 2020/2021 year”...
We are concerned with the automatic semantic interpretation of legal modificatory provisions. We propose a novel approach which pairs deep syntactic parsing and a fine-grained taxonomy of legal modifications. Although still in a developmental stage, the implemented system can be used to annotate with metainformation modificatory provisions of NormaInRete documents.
