The S-layer protein SwmA is required for nonflagellar swimming in marine Synechococcus. An analysis of mutations in seven genes at two loci in the Synechococcus sp. strain WH8102 genome indicates that a multicomponent transporter and glycosyltransferases are required for the production and proper localization of SwmA.

Characterization of two genetically distinct groups of marine Synechococcus sp. strains shows that one, but not the other, increases its phycourobilin/phycoerythrobilin chromophore ratio when growing in blue light. This ability of at least some marine Synechococcus strains to chromatically adapt may help explain their greater abundance in particular ocean environments than cyanobacteria of the ...

One copy of the psbA gene which codes for the photosystem II reaction center D-1 protein from the thermophilic cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus has been sequenced. It is feasible that a disulfide bridge between D-1 Cys212 and D-2 Cys212 is responsible for the thermostability of the photosystem II reaction center from Synechococcus elongatus.

"Candidatus Synechococcus spongiarum" represents the widespread cyanobacterial symbionts found in marine sponges with relatively high genomic variability and likely important ecological roles. We present here the draft genome sequence of "Candidatus Synechococcus spongiarum" m9, which was assembled from a metagenome of Theonella swinhoei sampled in the South China Sea.

Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus, which numerically dominate vast oceanic areas, are the two most abundant oxygenic phototrophs on Earth. Although they require solar energy for photosynthesis, excess light and associated high UV radiations can induce high levels of oxidative stress that may have deleterious effects on their growth and productivity. Here, we compared the photophysiologies of th...

Competition between phytoplankton species for nutrients and light has been studied for many years, but allelopathic interactions between them have been more difficult to characterize. We used liquid and plate assays to determine whether these interactions occur between marine unicellular cyanobacteria of the genus Synechococcus. We have found a clear growth impairment of Synechococcus sp. CC931...

Unicellular cyanobacteria are ubiquitous photoautotrophic microbes that contribute substantially to global primary production. Picocyanobacteria such as Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus depend on chlorophyll a-binding protein complexes to capture light energy. In addition, Synechococcus has accessory pigments organized into phycobilisomes, and Prochlorococcus contains chlorophyll b. Across a s...

The ntcA gene from Synechococcus sp. strain PCC 7942 encodes a regulatory protein which is required for the expression of all of the genes known to be subject to repression by ammonium in that cyanobacterium. Homologs to ntcA have now been cloned by hybridization from the cyanobacteria Synechocystis sp. strain PCC 6803 and Anabaena sp. strain PCC 7120. Sequence analysis has shown that these ntc...

A cyanobacterial expression vector was constructed using ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO) promoter and terminator sequences derived from Synechococcus PCC 6301. recombinant plasmid, designated pARUB19, has an ampicillin-resistant (ApR) gene as a selectable marker and four unique restriction sites to allow the insertion of foreign genes. Using this vector, the luciferase...
