Plant photosynthesis and photosystem II (PSII) are susceptible to high temperature. However, photosynthetic electron transport process under heat stress remains unclear. To reveal this issue, chlorophyll a fluorescence and modulated 820 nm reflection were simultaneously detected in sweet sorghum. At 43°C, J step in the chlorophyll a fluorescence transient was significantly elevated, suggesting ...
Sweet sorghum is tolerant to high temperature and drought and can be considered as an alternative crop to sugar beet and maize in Iran. In this study, the effects of nitrogen and potassium fertilizers on growth parameters including stem height, stem diameter, stem fresh weight, total fresh weight; carbohydrate contents including total sugar, brix value, sucrose content and purify; and juice ext...
Here, we report the draft genome sequence of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain NCIM3186 used in bioethanol production from sweet sorghum. The size of the genome is approximately 11.9 Mb and contains 5,347 protein-coding genes.
A robust strain of the species Saccharomyces cerevisiae CGMCC1949 was screened and identified, and advanced solid state fermentation (ASSF) technology for fuel ethanol production from sweet sorghum stalks was thus developed. The fermentation time was shortened to less than 30 h, and ethanol yield was 92% of its theoretical maximum. And in the meantime, the cost-effective storage was established...
BACKGROUND The availability of feedstock options is a key to meeting the volumetric requirement of 136.3 billion liters of renewable fuels per year beginning in 2022, as required in the US 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act. Life-cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of sorghum-based ethanol need to be assessed for sorghum to play a role in meeting that requirement. RESULTS Multiple sor...
The use of biofuels helps to reduce the dependency on fossil fuels and therefore decreases CO2 emission. Ethanol mixed with gasoline in mandatory percentages has been used in many countries. However, production of ethanol mainly depends on food crops, commonly associated with problems such as governmental policies and social controversies. Sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) is one of t...
Sugar accumulation is a common metabolic response under drought stress conditions. However, studies on the underlying molecular mechanisms of sugar accumulation under stress remain restricted. This study explores the role of sucrose metabolizing proteins in conferring tolerance to drought-induced hyperosmotic stress, and ultimately osmotic adjustment in sorghum. The effect of stress on sugar co...
Second-generation bioethanol production from sweet sorghum bagasse first extruded at different conditions and then treated with cell wall degrading enzymes and fermented with I. orientalis was determined. The twin extruder parameters tested were barrel temperature, screws speed, and feedstock moisture content using surface response methodology. The best extrusion conditions were 100°C, 200 rpm,...
Four different sorghum varieties “Moskwar” MSK, “Yellow short kaura” YSK, “Jigari” JGR and “Kilburi” KLB were malted at room temperature. They had different malting losses, ranging from 5.4% to 10.6%, `moisture content of malt varies from 5.2% to 11.1%. The values of hot water extractable was from 4.0g/l to 6.7g/l. Similar values of cold water extractables of 2.0g/100g was observed in all the v...
Sorghum bicolor is a genetically diverse C4 monocotyledonous species, encompassing varieties capable of producing high grain yields as well as sweet types which accumulate soluble sugars (predominantly sucrose) within their stems to high concentrations. Sucrose produced in leaves (sources) enters the phloem and is transported to regions of growth and storage (sinks). It is likely that sucrose t...
