Erythromycin-resistant Legionella spp. variants were obtained by a single passage of the naturally occurring bacteria on medium containing various concentrations of erythromycin. By disk diffusion susceptibility testing, at least three different phenotypic patterns of cross-resistance to macrolide, lincosamide, and streptogramin B antibiotics were observed among the 26 erythromycin-resistant st...
Four macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B resistance plasmids transferred into 13 recipients belonging to Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, and Listeria genera. The plasmids were stably maintained in all new hosts except Streptococcus sanguis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Listeria innocua and were identical to those found in the corresponding donor strains.
In 540 beta-hemolytic streptococci, the rates of resistance to tetracycline, chloramphenicol, erythromycin, and clindamycin were 80.0, 22.8, 20.2, and 19.1%, respectively. Of the erythromycin-resistant isolates, 63.3% had the constitutive macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B (MLSB) resistance phenotype, 23.9% had the M phenotype, and 12.8% had the inducible MLSB resistance phenotype. The const...
A gene which mediates inducible resistance to macrolides, lincosamides, and streptogramin B antibiotics, designated erm(33), was detected on the Staphylococcus sciuri plasmid pSCFS1. Analysis of the erm(33) reading frame suggested that this gene was the product of a recombination between an erm(C) gene and an erm(A) gene. Such a recombination event is a novel observation for erm genes.
Erm methyltransferases modify bacterial 23S ribosomal RNA at adenosine 2058 (A2058, Escherichia coli numbering) conferring resistance to macrolide, lincosamide, and streptogramin B (MLS) antibiotics. The motif that is recognized by Erm methyltransferases is contained within helix 73 of 23S rRNA and the adjacent single-stranded region around A2058. An RNA transcript of 72 nt that displays this m...
The transferable macrolides-lincosamides-streptogramin B (MLS) resistance determinant of clinical isolates of Clostridium difficile, designated ermZ, has been shown to share homology with ermB, which is associated with Staphylococcus aureus transposon Tn551. Homology within Tn551 was confined to less than or equal to 1.3 kilobases, whereas no homology could be demonstrated between Tn551 sequenc...
Community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) infections increased from 2000 to 2003 in hospitalized pediatric patients in Houston. CA-MRSA was associated with greater illness than was infection with methicillin-susceptible strains. Children with CA-MRSA were younger and mostly African American. Of MRSA isolates, 4.5% had the inducible macrolide-lincosamide-streptog...
