In order to enhance our understanding of the evolutionary history of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri spp.), we newly sequenced and analyzed data from seven complete mitochondrial genomes representing six squirrel monkey taxa. While previous studies have lent insights into the taxonomy and phylogeny of the genus, phylogenetic relationships and divergence date estimates among major squirrel monkey clad...

PURPOSE To evaluate and characterize the New-World squirrel monkey as a primate model for experimental choroidal neovascularization (CNV) studies and to compare it with the current Old-World macaque monkey model. METHODS Fibrovascular tissues (FVT) were elicited in 12 maculae of seven squirrel monkeys by laser photocoagulation using optimized laser parameters (532 nm, 0.05 second, 75 micro m,...

Pancreatic triacylglycerol lipase (PTL) is expressed in novel locations during hibernation in the thirteen-lined ground squirrel (Spermophilus tridecemlineatus). PTL cDNAs isolated from two of these locations, heart and white adipose tissue (WAT), contain divergent 5'-untranslated regions (5'-UTRs) suggesting alternative promoter usage or the possibility of multiple PTL genes in the ground squi...

We infected squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) with Nipah virus to determine the monkeys' suitability for use as primate models in preclinical testing of preventive and therapeutic treatments. Infection of squirrel monkeys through intravenous injection was followed by high death rates associated with acute neurologic and respiratory illness and viral RNA and antigen production.

Squirrel monkeys have high circulating cortisol to compensate for expression of low-affinity glucocorticoid receptors (GRs). We have demonstrated that the FK506-binding immunophilin FKBP51 is elevated in squirrel monkey lymphocytes (SML) and, in preliminary studies, have shown that squirrel monkey FKBP51 is inhibitory to GR binding. In this report, we have demonstrated that elevated FKBP51 is t...

The northern flying squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus) is the primary prey of northern spotted owls (Strix occidentalis caurina) and California spotted owls (S. o. occidentalis) throughout much of the owls' ranges. Flying squirrel abundance patterns, however, are poorly documented. Using capture-recapture techniques to estimate density, we compared flying squirrel densities among 3 types of fir (Abi...

This paper presents a framework for data integration currently under development in the Squirrel project. The framework is based on a special class of mediators, called Squirrel integration mediators. These mediators can support the traditional virtual and materialized approaches, and also hybrids of them. This permits considerable exibility when adapting to diverse data integration environment...

Behavioral tests of vision in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) reveal that there are widespread individual variations in color vision in this species. The variation has a sex-related component: whereas both trichromatic and dichromatic color vision occurs among female monkeys, males appear exclusively dichromatic. This finding suggests that, unlike humans, squirrel monkeys have only a single...

This paper presents a framework for data integration that is based on using \Squirrel integration mediators" that use materialization to support integrated views over multiple databases. These mediators generalize techniques from active databases to provide incremental propagation of updates to the materialized views. A framework based on \View Decomposition Plans" for optimizing the support of...

Sleep quantitation data on the Neotropical primate species, apart from the squirrel monkey, are still sparse. As such, we have quantitated sleep in the common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus), cotton top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus) and squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) reared in one primate facility simultaneously, by non-invasive actigraphy. The range in total sleep time/24h measured for male ...
