PURPOSE The objective of this study was to review the clinical outcome and prognosis of patients with sporadic and hereditary medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) who were treated at a single tertiary hospital in Korea. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the case files of 85 patients treated from August 1982 to February 2012. RESULTS In all, 65 patients (76.5%) had sporadic MTC and 20 patients (...

For a group G with G-conjugacy class of involutions X, the local fusion graph F(G,X) has X as its vertex set, with distinct vertices x and y joined by an edge if, and only if, the product xy has odd order. Here we show that, with only three possible exceptions, for all pairs (G,X) with G a sporadic simple group or the automorphism group of a sporadic simple group, F(G,X) has diameter 2.

OBJECTIVES To evaluate whether a significant difference in chromogranin A (CgA) levels exist between patients with familial and sporadic cancer. METHODS The study included 146 patients with clinically localized prostate adenocarcinoma (Stage T2N0M0), who underwent radical prostatectomy between June 1999 and June 2004. Patients were considered to have a positive family history for prostate can...

Porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) results from a metabolic block in heme synthesis at the level of uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase. We measured the activity of one of the enzymes preceding it in the heme biosynthetic pathway, porphobilinogen deaminase (PBGD; EC 4.3.1.8), in erythrocytes of 47 patients with symptomatic or asymptomatic familial or sporadic PCT. PBGD activity was significantly increase...

(1) Sporadic cases.-Retinoblastoma is a rare tumour and hereditary manifestations of it are rarer still. At the Royal Eye Hospital, London, there were seen 59 children with retinoblastoma during the 50 years 1894-1943, and among these there was only one familial group, now observed over three generations. This group has supplied 6 instances of the affection, the remaining 53 being isolated spor...

The goal of this paper is to give a conjectural census of complex hyperbolic sporadic triangle groups. We prove that only finitely many of these sporadic groups are lattices. We also give a conjectural list of all lattices among sporadic groups, and for each group in the list we give a conjectural group presentation, as well as a list of cusps and generators for their stabilisers. We describe s...

We previously have described a group of patients with gluten sensitivity presenting with ataxia (gluten ataxia) and suggested that this disease entity may account for a large number of patients with sporadic idiopathic ataxia. We have therefore investigated the prevalence of gluten sensitivity amongst a large cohort of patients with sporadic and familial ataxia and looked at possible genetic pr...

Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), is a group of heterogeneous disorders of hematopoietic stem cell colonies which is determined by incomplete hematopoiesis in one or more cell lines. The incidence increases with age and it has less been reported among patients under 50 years of age. The commonest form of MDS is sporadic, and familial occurrence of MDS is rare. Patients with familial MDS are young...

the divisibility graph $mathscr{d}(g)$ for a finite group $g$ is a graph with vertex set ${rm cs}(g)setminus{1}$‎ ‎where ${rm cs}(g)$ is the set of conjugacy class sizes of $g$‎. ‎two vertices $a$ and $b$ are adjacent whenever $a$ divides‎ ‎$b$ or $b$ divides $a$‎. ‎in this paper we will find the number of connected components of $mathscr{d}(g)$ where $g$ is a‎ ‎simple zassenhaus group or an sp...
