Benzoic acid, sorbic acid, and sodium lauryl sulfate at low concentrations (5 to 10 mg/liter) each effectively inhibited bacterial oxidation of ferrous iron in batch cultures of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The rate of chemical oxidation of ferrous iron in low-pH, sterile batch reactors was not substantially affected at the tested concentrations (5 to 50 mg/liter) of any of the compounds.

Three experiments were conducted with 288 weanling pigs to determine the effects of sorbic acid (SA) added to dry (DSG), high moisture (HMSG) or reconstituted (RSG) sorghum grain diets on gains and feed conversion. Dietary treatments for Exp. 1 were: DSG with and without .1% SA; HMSG with .1% SA and RSG with .1% SA. The DSG diets were fed ad libitum. The HMSG and RSG diets were mixed fresh from...

Coping with acid environments is one of the prerequisites for the soil saprophytic and human pathogenic lifestyle of Bacillus cereus. This minireview highlights novel insights in the responses displayed by vegetative cells and germinating spores of B. cereus upon exposure to low pH as well as organic acids, including acetic acid, lactic acid and sorbic acid. Insights regarding the possible acid...

In the title mol-ecular salt-adduct, C(5)H(8)N(3) (+)·C(6)H(7)O(2) (-)·C(6)H(8)O(2), the 2,3-diamino-pyridinium cation is essentially planar, with a maximum deviation of 0.013 (2) Å, and is protanated at its pyridine N atom. The sorbate anion and sorbic acid mol-ecules exist in extended conformations. In the crystal, the protonated N atom and one of the two amino-group H atoms are hydrogen bond...

abstract food preservatives are often added to food as preservation method. mostly one preservative alone cannot preserve a product effectively. so it is required to create a preservation system to overcome limitations derived from each preservative. using proper selection of different preservatives may lead to significant practical benefits. in this investigation, resistant strain of bacillus ...

The inhibitory effects of potassium sorbate on the bioenergetics, phenylalanine uptake, protein synthesis, and certain aspects of cell regulation were examined in putrefactive anaerobe 3679. Undissociated sorbic acid appeared to act as a protonophore by lowering the intracellular pH and dissipating the proton motive force of the membrane. Sorbate inhibited the uptake of phenylalanine, decreased...
