The excitation and propagation of finite-amplitude low-frequency solitary waves are investigated in an argon plasma impregnated with kaolin dust particles. A nonlinear longitudinal dust acoustic solitary wave is excited by pulse modulating the discharge voltage with a negative potential. It is found that the velocity of the solitary wave increases and the width decreases with the increase of th...

We study the behavior of solitary-wave solutions of some generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations with an external potential. The equations have the feature that in the absence of the external potential, they have solutions describing inertial motions of stable solitary waves. We construct solutions of the equations with a non-vanishing external potential corresponding to initial conditions ...

The random generation of coherent solitary waves from incoherent waves in a medium with an instantaneous nonlinearity has been observed. One excites a propagating incoherent spin wave packet in a magnetic film strip and observes the random appearance of solitary wave pulses. These pulses are as coherent as traditional solitary waves, but with random timing and a random peak amplitude.

The linear stability problem for solitary wave states of the Kawahara—or fifthorder KdV-type—equation and its generalizations is considered. A new formulation of the stability problem in terms of the symplectic Evans matrix is presented. The formulation is based on a multisymplectification of the Kawahara equation, and leads to a new characterization of the basic solitary wave, including change...

With an extended mapping approach and a linear variable separation approach, a series of solutions (including the Weierstrass elliptic function solutions, solitary wave solutions, periodic wave solutions and rational function solutions) of the (2+1)-dimensional modified dispersive water-wave system (MDWW) is derived. Based on the derived solutions and using some multi-valued functions, we find ...

In this Letter, we study (2 + 1)-dimensional Boussinesq equation and (3 + 1)-dimensional KP equation by using the new generalized transformation in Homogeneous Balance Method (HBM). As a result, many explicit exact solutions, which contain new solitary wave solutions, periodic wave solutions and the combined formal solitary wave solutions and periodic wave solutions, are obtained.  2002 Elsevi...

I investigated a Bose–Einstein condensate confined harmonically to 1D, within the framework of Gross–Pitaevskii mean–field theory. I consider the 1D Gross–Pitaevskii equation with a combined step in its external potential and nonlinear terms. I generalise solitary wave solutions to the equation in its nonlinear limit, to take into account a constant potential and nonlinearity. I then generalise...

In this article, we put a direct method to construct the rational solitary wave solutions for some nonlinear differential difference equations in mathematical physics which may be called the rational solitary wave difference method. We use the proposed method to construct the rational solitary exact solutions for some nonlinear differential difference equations via the lattice equation, the dis...

In this paper, we study the generalized coupled Hirota–Satsuma KdV system by using the two new improved projective Riccati equations method. As a result, many explicit exact solutions, which contain new solitary wave solutions, periodic wave solutions and combined formal solitary wave solutions and combined formal periodic wave solutions are obtained. c © 2007 Published by Elsevier Ltd

The existence of a line solitary-wave solution to the water-wave problem with strong surface-tension effects was predicted on the basis of a model equation in the celebrated 1895 paper by D. J. Korteweg and G. de Vries and rigorously confirmed a century later by C. J. Amick and K. Kirchgässner in 1989. A model equation derived by B. B. Kadomtsev and V. I. Petviashvili in 1970 suggests that the ...
