The ability to use linguistic concepts to describe perceptions of measured data is an emerging feature for artificial sensing systems. In this work, we address the problem of symbolically representing odour categories using the data from an electronic nose. One objective is to facilitate human and computer interaction and therefore, the names given to the odours are coorelated with a human user...

To generate spontaneous utterances, it is important to omit some items from them appropriately. Previously, generation of elliptical utterances is discussed only from a view of whether an item in question is known or unknown in the context of dialogue. We point out that some items that are already known should not be omitted in some situation. For example, omitting too many items from utterance...

In this paper, we reconsider the appropriateness of certain statistical analyses in innovation adoption studies and suggest that partial observability models may sometimes be more useful. The proposed models allow for a flexible specification of the process of adoption from one stage to two stages, facilitate the modelling of non-adopters and remedy the violation of the assumption of full infor...

Throughout the whole history of IS adoption research, researchers struggled to frame, conceptualize, and define social norms in a sufficient way. While research during the last three years provided helpful advice to overcome this challenge, it still remains the question, why other shapes of norms (e.g. cultural norms, religious norms, moral norms, or legal norms) were hardly ever framed or disc...

Distance) data analysis for terrain classification. Results of a real scenario show the appropriateness of the approach that does not require any artificial landmark (e.g., helipad) and is robust to occlusions, light variations and high vibrations.

The word “wisdom” is rarely seen in contemporary technology and learning discourse. This conceptual paper aims to provide some clear principles that answer the question: How can we establish wisdom in complex learning networks? By considering the nature of contemporary calls for wisdom the paper provides a metatheoretial framework to evaluate the appropriateness of the characteristics of learni...

We investigate whether students can edit their learner model appropriately considering: (i) evidence about the model contents; (ii) accuracy of self-assessment; (iii) type of information in the model; (iv) level of knowledge.

We examine the Mazur-Tate canonical height pairing defined between an abelian variety over a global field and its dual. By expressing local factors of this pairing in terms of nonarchimedean theta functions, we show in the case of global function fields that certain of these pairings are annihilated by universal norms coming from Carlitz cyclotomic extensions. Furthermore, for elliptic curves w...

We study the expected value of support functions of random polytopes in a certain direction, where the random polytope is given by independent random vectors uniformly distributed in an isotropic convex body. All results are obtained by an utterly novel approach, using probabilistic estimates in connection with Orlicz norms that were not used in this connection before.
