Sporadic infection with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) in New Mexico increased from 0.9 cases per 100,000 population (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.5-1.36) in 2004 to 1.7 (95% CI 1.14-2.26) in 2007. Non-O157 STEC was more common in nonwhite residents, children <5 years of age, and urban residents.

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) bacteria are foodborne pathogens that can be carried by various animals. The swine STEC population is partially composed of host-specific strains that are often not well characterized. In this work, the genome sequences of a number of swine STEC strains are presented.

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) strains are important foodborne pathogens associated with human disease. Most disease-associated STEC strains carry the locus of enterocyte effacement (LEE); however, regularly LEE-negative STEC strains are recovered from ill patients. Few reference sequences are available for these isolate types. Here, we report here the complete genome sequences f...

We isolated Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157:H7 strains resistant to third-generation cephalosporins. The resistant strains harbored blaCMY-2, a plasmid-mediated AmpC β-lactamase. Genotyping of isolates revealed the possible spread of this problematic bacterium. Results suggested the importance of the investigation and surveillance of enterobacteria with plasmids harboring blaCMY-2.

Recent water related outbreaks of shiga toxin producing E. coli O157 have resulted in increased attention of the water industry to this potentially deadly pathogen. Current methods to detect E. coli O157 and its virulence genes are laborious and time-consuming. Specificity, sensitivity and simple use of a real-time PCR method makes it an attractive alternative for the detection of STEC E. coli ...

A real-time multiplex PCR targeting stx(2), wzy(O104), and fliC(H4) of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O104:H4 correctly determined the presence or absence of these genes in 253 EHEC isolates and enrichment cultures of stool samples from 132 patients. It is a rapid, sensitive, and specific tool for detecting EHEC O104:H4 in human stools.

Escherichia coli is suspected to be involved with Crohn's disease. Adherence and invasion to epithelial cells are properties commonly observed in these bacteria. Here, we present a draft genome sequence of E. coli D92/09, a multidrug-resistant strain, which besides showing these properties produces Shiga cytotoxin-1 and possibly other toxins.

A multiplex PCR was designed to detect Escherichia coli O104:H4, a hybrid pathotype of Shiga toxigenic and enteroaggregative E. coli, in cattle feces. A total of 248 fecal samples were tested, and 20.6% were positive for serogroup O104. The O104 isolates did not carry genes characteristic of the virulent hybrid strain.

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is a foodborne pathogen. We report here the high-quality draft whole-genome sequences of five STEC strains isolated from clinical cases in the United States. This report is for STEC of serotypes O55:H7, O79:H7, O91:H14, O153:H2, and O156:H25.
