We present a rendering algorithm that produces images with the appearance of a traditional cartoon from a 3D description of the scene (a static or an animated scene). The 3D scene is rendered with techniques allowing to: outline the profiles and edges of objects in back, uniformly color the surface inside the outlines, render shadows (backface shadows and projected shadows) due to light sources.

Shadow mapping is a popular technique for shadow generation. However, it is still a difficult problem to generate high quality shadows in real time framerates for arbirary scenes. This work summarizes state-of-the-art techniques to achieve pixel accurate shadows and points out the various problems of generating artifact free shadows. Furthermore, we present a new technique that uses multiple ji...

A key problem in recognition is that the image of an object depends on the lighting conditions. We investigated whether recognition is sensitive to illumination using 3-D objects that were lit from either the left or right, varying both the shading and the cast shadows. In experiments 1 and 2 participants judged whether two sequentially presented objects were the same regardless of illumination...

Coalminers with "A" shadows (the first stage of progressive massive fibrosis (PMF)) have a similar standardised mortality ratio (SMR) to those without PMF, and those with A shadows have a much higher specific mortality from pneumoconiosis. It is therefore argued that either A shadows confer immunity against some other disease(s) or that those developing A shadows are selected on the basis of in...

Shadow mapping has been a popular way of generating shadows in real-time applications, but it is still incapable of generating realistic real time soft shadows for area light. There is an algorithm for generating soft shadows for linear light with few samples, but the algorithm is not suitable for area light. In this article, the author presents a modified method to the shadow mapping algorithm...

Rendering of large, detailed 3D terrains on commodity hardware has become possible through the use of raycasting, data caching and prefetching. Adding dynamic shadows as they appear during a day-night cycle remais a challenge however, because shadow rendering requires access to the entire terrain, invalidating data streaming strategies. In this work we present a novel, practicable shadow render...

This paper presents a coarse-to-fine approach to eliminate unexpected shadows of multiple pedestrians from a static and textured background using Gaussian shadow modeling. At the coarse stage, a moment-based method is proposed to estimate the rough boundaries between shadows and moving objects. Then, at the fine stage, the rough approximation of shadow region provides a key to model shadows. Th...

Shadows usually cause various problems in three-dimensional shape recovery and measurement methods. In particular shading based approaches such as shape-from-shading or the photometric stereo method produce no or wrong results if the shadows are not treated appropriately. We show how information extracted from shadows can be employed to reduce the problems caused by them. This is done for multi...

The contribution of this paper is a technique that in certain circumstances allows one to avoid the removal of dynamic shadows in the visible spectrum making use of images in the infrared spectrum. This technique emerged from a real problem concerning the autonomous navigation of a vehicle in a wind farm. In this environment, the dynamic shadows cast by the wind turbines' blades make it necessa...

Shadows can be occurred when an object partially or totally obstructs direct light from a source of illumination. Shadows have their-own merits and demerits. Sometimes it will provide useful information about objects. But the presence of shadows may reduce the reliability of many computer vision algorithms, including segmentation, object detection, tracking, etc. Therefore, to improve the perfo...
