Serum creatinine, urinary creatinine and endogenous creatinine clearance were measured in various age groups in normal subjects and in those suffering from renal disorders. Serum creatinine was found to be significantly high in cases of chronic renal failure and renal hypertension. Serum and urinary creatinine levels in normal subjects were found to vary with the age. BACKGROUND Serum creatinine as a classic marker of renal function has several limitations in the detection of renal dysfunction. OBJECTIVES This study assessed the validity of serum cystatin C as a marker of renal function in critically ill patients with normal serum creatinine. PATIENTS AND METHODS Eighty adult patients referred to intensive care units with serum creatinine levels < 1.5 mg...

PURPOSE The practice of intentional rounding up of serum creatinine (SCr) in elderly patients with low measured values can lead to an underestimation of creatinine clearance and subsequent inaccurate dosing of medications. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of vancomycin dose calculations for patients aged ≥65 years using an SCr rounded up to 1 mg/dL versus actual SCr....

We compared creatinine concentrations in serum and urine and creatinine clearances determined by two Jaffé (Beckman's "Astra," Boehringer Mannheim Diagnostics) and two enzymatic (Kodak, Boehringer Mannheim Diagnostics) methods. Serum creatinine and creatinine clearances determined by each method were also compared with the glomerular filtration rate as measured with use of sodium [125I]iothalam...

Serum urea and creatinine are extensively used as parameters to screen for azotaemia. Their reciprocal plots roughly correlate with glomerular filtration rate (GFR). They are, however, subject to influence by non-renal factors and to increase their specificity they are often tested concurrently. In renal disease they are expected to behave similarly, with both parameters increasing as GFR decre...

Hassan Ahmadvand,

Coenzyme Q 10 is a natural antioxidant and free radicals scavenger. In the present study, we examined effect of coenzyme Q 10 on hemoglobin A 1C , serum urea and creatinine in alloxan-induced Type 1 diabetic rats. Thirty Sprage-Dawley male rats were divided into three groups randomly; group one as control, group two diabetic untreatment, and group three treatments with coenzyme Q ...

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common problem in critically ill patients and is independently associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Recently, serum cystatin C has been shown to be superior to creatinine in early detection of renal function impairment. We compared estimated GFR based on serum cystatin C with estimated GFR based on serum creatinine for early detection of ...

OBJECTIVE To assess the reversibility of the elevation of serum creatinine levels in patients with diabetes after 5 years of continuous on-trial fenofibrate therapy. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS An on-drug/off-drug ancillary study to the Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) Lipid Trial to investigate posttrial changes in serum creatinine and cystatin C. Eligible participa...
