Among satellite systems, low earth orbit (LEO) satellite system will make an important role in new fiture communication services, because of its less propagation delay, less power consumption in the user terminal and the satellites, and efficient spectrum utilization using smaller coverage area for each satellite than geostationa y (GEO) counterpart. However, a number of mobility problems that ...

[1] The scattering of solar radiation by cirrus clouds often contaminates aerosol products retrieved from satellite-based measurements using channels located in the visible and near-IR spectral region. Previously, it was demonstrated that a narrow satellite channel located near 1.38 mm is very effective in detecting the high level thin cirrus clouds. In this paper, we describe a ratio technique...

Cloud heights derived from single-channel, satellite infrared data can be relatively uncertain under certain conditions such as overlapped or optically thin clouds. During the daytime, optical depths derived from 0.63 μm visible (VIS) reflectances are used to adjust the altitude of optically thin clouds. Without the adjustment, the cloud heights are significantly underestimated diminishing the ...

The role of meta-reasoning in a satellite image interpretation program is described. A brief description of the satellite image understanding program is given, as well as a description of the self-adaptive architecture GRAVA. Meta-knowledge and abstract knowledge are shown to enable self-adaptation which results in greater robustness and reliability in the program.

Satellite cells are glial cells wrapped around somata of sensory and autonomic ganglion neurons. Neither their functional roles nor electrical properties have been fully clarified so far. Using immunohistochemistry, we found that inwardly rectifying K+ channel subunit Kir4.1 (also called Kir1.2 or KAB-2) was expressed prominently in the satellite cells of cochlear ganglia. The Kir4.1 immunoreac...

Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) can map water conditions at high spatial (horizontal and vertical) and temporal resolution, including under cloudy conditions when satellite and airborne remote sensing are not feasible. As part of the RADYO program, we deployed a passive radiometer on an AUV in the Santa Barbara Channel and off the coast of Hawaii to apply existing bio-optical algorithms f...
