A dinuclear self-assembled cationic macrocycle based on Pt(II)-N(pyridine) coordinative bonds and having competitive triflate anions, as metal counterions, is used in the construction of [2]rotaxane and [2]pseudorotaxane architectures assisted by hydrogen bonding. The kinetic lability of the Pt(II)-N(pyridine) coordinative bond controls the dynamics of the [2]rotaxane.

A ferrocene functionalised redox-active [3]rotaxane which contains two interlocked anion recognition sites has been prepared by chloride anion templation. With chloride two equivalents of anion are bound, one in each of the interlocked cavities, while sulfate forms a 1:1 stoichimetric sandwich type complex; the rotaxane can also electrochemically sense the two anions in acetonitrile.

Three new fumaramide-derived [3]rotaxanes have been synthesized, with the aim of macrocycle linking to form a molecular box. In one case, a nine-component templated [3]rotaxane synthesis was accomplished in 40% yield. Rotaxane reduction resulted in an unexpectedly facile de-slipping process.

The template-directed construction of crown-ether-like macrocycles around secondary dialkylammonium ions (R2NH2+) has been utilized for the expedient (one-pot) and high-yielding synthesis of a diverse range of mechanically interlocked molecules. The clipping together of appropriately designed dialdehyde and diamine compounds around R2NH2+-containing dumbbell-shaped components proceeds through t...

Stable pillar[5]arene-containing [2]rotaxane building blocks with pentafluorophenyl ester stoppers have been efficiently prepared on a multi-gram scale. Reaction of these various nucleophiles gave access to wide range [2]rotaxanes amide, or thioester in good excellent yields. The rotaxane structure is fully preserved during chemical transformations. Actually, the addition-elimination mechanism ...

A highly constrained [2]rotaxane, constructed in such a way that the tetracationic cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) ring is restricted to reside on a monopyrrolotetrathiafulvalene unit, has been synthesised and characterised. This design allows the deslipping free energy barrier for the tetracationic ring in all three redox states of the rotaxane to be determined.

The first anion-templated synthesis of a lanthanide-containing interlocked molecule is demonstrated by utilizing a nitrite anion to template initial pseudorotaxane formation. Subsequent stoppering of the interpenetrated assembly allows for the preparation of a lanthanide-functionalized [2]rotaxane in high yield. Following removal of the nitrite anion template, the europium [2]rotaxane host is d...

The first nitrate anion templated assembly of an interlocked molecular architecture is demonstrated through the preparation of a [2]rotaxane. Removal of the discrete nitrate anion template from the [2]rotaxane reveals an interlocked host system capable of strong and selective recognition of nitrate, in aqueous-organic solvent mixtures, over a range of more basic mono-charged oxoanions.

The synthesis of a functionally rigid [2]rotaxane incorporating pi-electron rich 1,5-disubstituted naphthalene (NP) ring systems, encircled by the pi-electron deficient tetracationic cyclophane, cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene), is described; in the solid state, the molecules of this donor-acceptor [2]rotaxane line themselves up in parallel pi-pi stacks of alternating NP ring systems and bipyridi...

The first lanthanide cation-templated synthesis of an interlocked structure is demonstrated through an interpenetrated assembly between a pyridine N-oxide threading component coordinating to a lanthanide cation complexed within a macrocycle. Stoppering of the pseudo-rotaxane assembly allows for preparation of the [2]rotaxane.
