We have observed the compensation of loss in a metal by a gain in a dielectric medium in the mixture of an Ag aggregate and a Rhodamine 6G dye. The demonstrated sixfold enhancement of the Rayleigh scattering is the evidence of the enhancement of the surface-plasmon resonance. The reported experimental observation facilitates many applications of nanoplasmonics.

Using optical tweezers combined with luminescence measurements we detected the optical field around two optically trapped silica microspheres partially covered by metal. By monitoring the luminescence of rhodamine 6G we were able to observe an increase of the local field intensity owing to the coupling of the local surface plasmons at the surfaces of two spheres.

A solution-processed patterning of functional organic materials in emulsion is reported. The concept is to absorb microdrops onto predefined locations by hydrophilicity difference. Owing to a universal solvent used, the method can be applied to pattern variety materials on substrates of interest over large size. The figure shows Rhodamine 6G patterned film.

A fluorescence based cholesterol detection method has been developed using competitive host-guest interaction between graphene bound β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) with rhodamine 6G (R6G) and cholesterol. Fluorescence of β-CD incorporated R6G is quenched by graphene but is 'turned on' by cholesterol as it replaces R6G from the β-CD host.
