Abstract A 26 -year- old woman presented with rhabdomyolysis secondary to severe hypokalemia. Hypertension and metabolic alkalosis could lead to the suspicion of primary aldosteronism, which was confirmed by a decreased plasma rennin, elevated plasma aldosterone levels and high aldosterone/rennin ratio additionally. Additionally adrenal computed tomography showed an adrenal tumour. Blood press...
BACKGROUND Rhabdomyolysis may lead to serious complications, and treatment is both time-consuming and costly. The condition can be caused by many factors, including intense exercise. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the number of hospitalisations due to exercise-induced rhabdomyolysis has changed in recent years. We describe the disease course in hospitalised patients, and c...
Background and Aim: Rhabdomyolysis is a clinical and biochemical syndrome that results from acute poisonings. The present study aimed to investigate clinical and biochemical characteristics of rhabdomyolysis in patients with severe acute poisonings. Materials and Methods: Out of 450 patients with severe acute poisonings who admitted in the Toxicology Intensive Care Unit of Loghman Hakim ...
Background: Rhabdomyolysis is a clinical syndrome that results in releasing myoglobin content from damaged muscle cells into circulation and often causes acute kidney injury (1). Different mechanisms are considered to be responsible in rhabdomyolysis and renal failure. However, free radical generation is the most important mechanism resulting in kidney injury. Thus, the effect ...
Previous studies on statin have revealed that increasing age, renal insufficiency, and concomitant medications were associated with rhabdomyolysis. However, there is a lack of analysis on the magnitude of such association in the Asia-Pacific region. The objectives of this study were to identify risk factors of statin-associated rhabdomyolysis in Thai patients and to evaluate the magnitude of as...
OBJECTIVE Rhabdomyolysis is a rare and potentially serious adverse drug reaction (ADR) to antipsychotic medicines. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical circumstances surrounding the diagnosis of rhabdomyolysis in children and adolescents treated with antipsychotic medicines. We also critically reviewed individual case safety reports (ICSRs) of suspected ADRs to evaluate how cli...
Influenza virus is the most frequently reported viral cause of rhabdomyolysis. A 7-year-old child is presented with rhabdomyolysis associated with parainfluenza type 2 virus. Nine cases of rhabdomyolysis associated with parainfluenza virus have been reported. Complications may include electrolyte disturbances, acute renal failure, and compartment syndrome.
Rhabdomyolysis is a clinical picture which is rarely seen in children. In this case report here it is presented a patient who has biochemical and clinical signs of rhabdomyolysis and admitted to our clinic with hypernatremia. The authors think that it is necessary to be alert for rhabdomyolysis in severe hypernatremia cases.
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Drug-induced rhabdomyolysis is a common syndrome that is complex and potentially life threatening. This article reviews the pathophysiology, clinical presentations, and common compounds that cause drug-induced rhabdomyolysis. RECENT FINDINGS The list of drugs and inciting agents that cause rhabdomyolysis is quite extensive. Rhabdomyolysis is defined as skeletal muscle injury...
Exertional rhabdomyolysis is characterised by muscle breakdown associated with strenuous exercise or normal exercise under extreme circumstances. Key features are severe muscle pain and sudden transient elevation of serum creatine kinase (CK) levels with or without associated myoglobinuria. Mild cases may remain unnoticed or undiagnosed. Exertional rhabdomyolysis is well described among athlete...
