BACKGROUND/AIM It is known that glaucoma is associated with elevated intraocular pressure and obesity, yet the precise etiology remains unclear. The aim of this study was to determine whether there is a potential causality between the volume of retrobulbar adipose tissue and the level of intraocular pressure in obese subjects compared with non-obese. METHODS A total of 100 subjects were divid...
Recent improvements in technique have made cataract surgery a popular procedure in the outpatient setting. One of those advances has been the use of retrobulbar block instead of general anesthesia. This article explains the anatomy, pharmacology, technique and complications of retrobulbar block.
Background: The injection of retrobulbar block is associated with significant pain and discomfort. Therefore a short-acting IV analgesic before retrobulbar injection has been advocated. Objective: To compare remifentanil, alfentanil and fentanyl in providing analgesia for retrobulbar block injection. Methods: 69 patients were enrolled randomly into three groups of 23 each to receive either Remi...
purpose : to report a case of total blindness a few hours after orbital blowout fracture repair the visual acuity (va) returned to normal after immediate reoperation. case report : a 21-year-old man with obvious enophthalmos in the left side, 2 weeks after car accident, was candidate for orbital floor reconstruction surgery. anterior orbitotomy from subcilliary incision was done and at the end ...
Peribulbar anaesthesia has been recommended as a safer alternative to retrobulbar anaesthesia. We report a case of perforation of the globe sustained during peribulbar anaesthesia which resulted in blindness. Orbital injections are potentially dangerous, be they peribulbar or retrobulbar. To minimise the risk, short, blunt needles are advocated for the peribulbar route.
OBJECTIVE To compare the effects of fentanyl or remifentanil in combination with midazolam on hemodynamic parameters, pain, and satisfaction profile in cataract surgery. METHODS This randomized, double blind, prospective study was conducted between 10 and 20th July 2005 at Kudret Eye Hospital, Ankara, Turkey. Patients scheduled for cataract surgery by the phacoemulsification technique were ra...
Purpose To report the detection of retrobulbar blood vessel in the optical coherence tomography angiographic (OCTA) images of two eyes with pathologic myopia. Observations Two eyes of 2 cases with pathologic myopia were examined by OCTA (RTVue XR Avanti, Optovue, and Cirrus 5000, Zeiss). Case 1 was a 64-year-old man, and Case 2 was a 65-year-old woman. In Case 1, the thickness of the subfovea...
Ocular regional anesthesia can be accomplished with either a peribulbar or retrobulbar approach. Each has advantages and disadvantages. Complications can be vision-threatening or life-threatening. Positioning the eye in neutral gaze when retrobulbar block is executed and using a needle no longer than 31 mm are effective strategies to reduce the incidence of serious complications.
Traumatic retrobulbar hemorrhage may result in acute loss of vision that is reversible when recognized and treated promptly. A case of traumatic retrobulbar hemorrhage is presented. The technique of emergent orbital decompression by lateral canthotomy and cantholysis is described. The anatomy of the lateral canthus and the surgical procedure are illustrated by gross dissection.
