Photonic crystal nanocavities, which have modal volumes of the order of a cubic wavelength in the material, are of great interest as flexible platforms for manipulating photons. Recent developments in ultra-high quality factor nanocavities with long photon lifetimes have encouraged us to develop an ultra-compact and flexible photon manipulation technology where photons are trapped in networks o...

We have developed a theory that unifies the analysis of the modal properties of surface-emitting chirped circular grating lasers. This theory is based on solving the resonance conditions which involve two types of reflectivities of chirped circular gratings. This approach is shown to be in agreement with previous derivations which use the characteristic equations. Utilizing this unified analysi...

A one-dimensional model has recently been developed for the analysis of nonlinear standing waves in an acoustical resonator. This model is modified to include energy losses in the boundary layer along the resonator wall. An investigation of the influence of the boundary layer on the acoustical field in the resonator and on the energy dissipation in the resonator is conducted. The effect of the ...

The inverse design of a three-dimensional nanophotonic resonator is presented. The design methodology is computationally fast (10 minutes on a standard desktop workstation) and utilizes a 2.5-dimensional approximation of the full three-dimensional structure. As an example, we employ the proposed method to design a resonator which exhibits a mode volume of 0.32(λ/n)3 and a quality factor of 7063.

We consider the problem of oscillation damping in air of a thermally actuated microlever as it gradually approaches an infinite wall in parallel geometry. As the gap is decreased from 20 microm down to 400 nm, we observe the increasing damping of the lever Brownian motion in the fluid laminar regime. This manifests itself as a linear decrease in the lever quality factor accompanied by a dramati...

We report an experimental observation of strong variations of quality factor and mode splitting among whispering-gallery modes with the same radial order and different azimuthal orders in a scattering-limited microdisk resonator. A theoretical analysis based on the statistical properties of the surface roughness reveals that mode splittings for different azimuthal orders are uncorrelated, and v...

We perform classical molecular dynamics simulation to investigate the mechanisms underpinning the unresolved, experimentally observed temperature-dependent scaling transition in the quality factors of graphene nanomechanical resonators (GNMRs). Our simulations reveal that the mechanism underlying this temperature scaling phenomenon is the out-of-plane migration of adsorbates on GNMRs. Specifica...

Direct metrology of coherent short-wavelength beamlines is important for obtaining operational beam characteristics at the experimental site. However, since beam-time limitation imposes fast metrology procedures, a multi-parametric metrology from as low as a single shot is desirable. Here a two-dimensional (2D) procedure based on high-resolution Fresnel diffraction analysis is discussed and app...

Improving the conditions of the underprivileged and backward has been the major issues while forming the policies of India as a welfare state. The target is children in many policies, acts and also in schemes. The Government of India started Midday meal (MDM) scheme in the government primary schools with the objective of improving health of the poor children. In addition, Right to Education imp...

A microwave photonic filter with the highest reported quality factor (Q) value of 4895.31 is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by using two cascaded infinite impulse response (IIR) filters. Each IIR filter comprises both optical and electronic signals in a feedback loop and thus the loop length can be reduced without the need to consider the light coherence length. The Vernier effect ena...
