The family of semi-crystalline, aromatic, high-temperature thermoplastics known as poly(ether-ketone)s are insoluble in conventional organic solvents, but undergo completely general and quantitatively reversible reactions with alkanedithiols in strong acid media, to give soluble poly(dithioacetal)s, which are readily characterisable by GPC and light scattering techniques.

The water soluble tetradentate Schiff base, N,N'-bis(5-sulfonatosalicylidene)-diaminoethane (H2salen-SO3), will readily coordinate to the uranyl(VI) cation, but not to the same extent to trivalent lanthanide cations. This allows for the reversal of conventional solvent extraction properties and opens the possibility for novel separation processes.

Efficient syntheses of chiral fragments derived from chiral amino alcohols are described. Several unique scaffolds were readily accessed in 1-5 synthetic steps leading to 45 chiral fragments, including oxazolidinones, morpholinones, lactams, and sultams. These fragments have molecular weights ranging from 100 to 255 Da and are soluble in water (0.085 to >15 mM).
