The growth of yeasts that occur naturally in grape juice was quantitatively examined during the fermentation of four wines that had been inoculated with Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Although S. cerevisiae dominated the wine fermentations, there was significant growth of the natural species Kloeckera apiculata, Candida stellata, Candida colliculosa, Candida pulcherrima, and Hansenula anomala.

The antimycotic activity of 16 o-nitrophenylhydrazones against strains of Hansenula anomala, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida parapsylosis, and Cryptococcus albidus was tested. All 16 compounds inhibited growth of the yeast strains. The inhibitory activity of the 4 methyl-derivatives substituted on the aromatic nucleus was particularly significant.

The draft genome sequence of the smut fungus Tilletiaria anomala UBC 951 (Basidiomycota, Ustilaginomycotina) is presented. The sequenced genome size is 18.7 Mb, consisting of 289 scaffolds and a total of 6,810 predicted genes. This is the first genome sequence published for a fungus in the order Georgefisheriales (Exobasidiomycetes).

A new species was synthesized artificially by chromosome doubling of an interspecific hybrid between cassava and Manihot anomala. The ensuing polyploid type exhibits an apomictic nature and maintains its morphological characteristics in the progeny. It showed a 29% frequency of multiembryonic sacs in its examined ovules whereas the multiembryonic sacs were absent in the diploid type.
