Supercontinuum based sources and measurement techniques are developed, enabling optical ultra-broadband studies of nano-scale photonic crystal devices and integrated photonic circuits over 1.2 – 2.0 μm wavelength range. Experiments involving 1-D periodic photonic crystal microcavity waveguides and 3-D periodic photonic crystals with embedded point defects are described. Experimental findings ar...

A monolithically integrated photocurrent driven wavelength converter is fabricated and characterized. Bit-Error-Rate measurements at 10Gb/s show 1dB power penalties over 32nm with extinction ratios between 8.5-9.5dB. Input power is -11dBm and conversion efficiency is +13dB. ©2005 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (250.5300) Photonic Integrated Circuits; (250.3140) Integrated Optoelectronic...

In this paper, the use of diffractive grating structures to efficiently interface between a single mode fiber and a high index contrast waveguide circuit is outlined. We show that high index contrast grating structures allow for broadband and high efficiency coupling. Since no polished facet is required on the photonic integrated circuit to interface with the optical fiber, fiber-to-chip gratin...

Dedicated multi-project wafer (MPW) runs for photonic integrated circuits (PICs) from Si foundries mean that researchers and small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) can now afford to design and fabricate Si photonic chips. While these bare Si-PICs are adequate for testing new device and circuit designs on a probe-station, they cannot be developed into prototype devices, or tested outside of the labo...

The ability to control light propagation in photonic integrated circuits is at the foundation of modern light-based communication. However, the inherent crosstalk in densely packed waveguides and the lack of robust control of the coupling are a major roadblock toward ultra-high density photonic integrated circuits. As a result, the diffraction limit is often considered as the lower bound for ul...
