Experimental tests have been carried out for characterizing the performance of a new single-photon avalanche diode. The detector is specifically designed for picosecond timecorrelated single photon counting, aiming to obtain a time response free from the tail effects and/or secondary bumps observed in all other available single-photon detectors. The experimental results confirm that an unpreced...

A cesium 6S(1/2) --> 8S(1/2) two-photon-transition (TPT)-stabilized 822.5 nm diode laser is reported for the first time to our knowledge. Allan deviation of 4.4 x 10(-13) (60 s) was achieved, and the possible systematic errors were evaluated as smaller than 2 kHz. We demonstrate that the cesium TPT-stabilized diode laser could be a reliable frequency reference at 822.5 nm wavelength.

background: during radiotherapy treatment, critical organs are shielded using lead and cerrobend blocks. the objective of this study is to compare the effects of lead and cerrobend shielding blocks on incident photon beam. methods: collimator scatter factors were measured for open square fields (3 x 3 cm to 40 x 40 cm) defined by collimator jaws and for fields blocked down to smaller asymmetric...

Introduction: During intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) technique, theoretically, presence of flattening filter (FF) across the beamline of clinical linear accelerator (linac) is not essential to obtain uniform lateral profiles due to intensity modulation of photon beams by multileaf collimators (MLCs). The aim of this study was to investigate the dosimetrical propert...

To establish Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) for non-resectable liver metastases and for in vitro experiments at the TRIGA Mark II reactor at the University of Mainz, Germany, it is necessary to have a reliable dose monitoring system. The in vitro experiments are used to determine the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of liver and cancer cells in our mixed neutron and gamma field. We...

We report on the first implementation of a single photon avalanche diode (SPAD) in 130nm CMOS technology. The SPAD is fabricated as p+/nwell junction with octagonal shape. A guard ring of p-well around the p+ anode is used to prevent premature discharge. To investigate the dynamics of the new device, both active and passive quenching methods have been used. Single photon detection is achieved b...

We present an optical quantum random number generator (QRNG) based on the digitized time interval between random photon arrivals. By tailoring the photon flux of the laser diode, the statistics of the waiting-time distribution are altered to approximate the ideal, uniform case. This greatly reduces the need for post-processing, and enables fast, secure quantum random number generation at rates ...

We describe a novel frequency-domain photon migration instrument employing direct diode laser modulation and avalanche photodiode detection, which is capable of noninvasively determinating the optical properties of biological tissues in near real time. An infinite medium diffusion model was used to extract absorption and transport scattering coefficients from 300-kHz to 800-MHz photon-density w...
