Motile aeromonad septicemia caused by mesophilic strains of Aeromonas hydrophila is a widespread problem in cultured freshwater fish. We announce here the draft genome sequence of the multidrug-resistant A. hydrophila strain Ae25, isolated from a koi carp (Cyprinus carpio) with motile aeromonad septicemia that was collected from an ornamental fish-breeding farm in Sri Lanka.

the potential of marine actinobacteria particularly streptomyces as a single cell protein (scp) feed for the growth of ornamental fish, xiphophorus helleri has been investigated. the streptomyces strains used as scp were isolated from the marine sponges, namely callyspongia diffusa , mycale mytilorum , tedania anhelans and dysidea fragilis . six scp feeds were prepared and their effects were co...

Parasitic diseases are harmful and limiting factors in breeding and rearing ornamental fish industry. In this study, 400 apparently healthy ornamental fishes from five species (each species 80 specimens) including: Goldfish (Carassius auratus), guppy (Poecilia reticulate), angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare), discus (Symphsodon discus) and sailfin molli...

The demand for fish for food, recreation, and ornamental aquariums is steadily increasing. Natural fish populations have declined during the last several decades because of environmental degradation and over-fishing. This has resulted in an increased effort in the development of techniques for hatchery production of fish. Traditional aquaculture species such as trout, catfish, common carp, gold...

Sexual selection is thought to be opposed by natural selection such that ornamental traits express a balance between these two antagonistic influences. Phenotypic variation among populations may indicate local shifts in this balance, or that different stable 'solutions' are possible, but testing these alternatives presents a major challenge. In the guppy (Poecilia reticulata), a small freshwate...

A colored phenotype is an important feature of ornamental fish. In mammals, microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) was found to regulate the development of melanocytes. In this study, the mitfa cDNA was first cloned from the Japanese ornamental (Koi) carp (Cyprinus carpio L.), an important ornamental freshwater fish. The full-length cDNA of the mitfa gene contains 1634 bp, coding...

Although infections caused by megalocytiviruses have been reported from a wide range of finfish species for several decades, molecular characterisation of the viruses involved has been undertaken only on more recent cases. Sequence analysis of the major capsid protein and adenosine triphosphatase genes is reported here from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded material from 2 archival ornamental f...

A total of 74 phenotypically identified presumptive motile Aeromonas isolates recovered from septicaemic freshwater ornamental fish in Sri Lanka were genetically characterized by sequencing of rpoD and gyrB genes. rpoD/gyrB phylogeny confirmed only 53 isolates as Aeromonas, among which A. veronii was the predominant species (79.2%), followed by A. hydrophila (7.5%), A. caviae (5.7%), A. jandaei...

Ornamental aquaculture is a leading and profitable industry in Iran. One of the essential needs for the development of this industry is the introduction of popular species. Therefore, it is necessary for experts and breeders of ornamental aquatics to introduce important ornamental species around the world and provide their ecological and biological characteristics, and reproduction techniques. ...

In the nature, ornamental fish have a variety of beautiful colors that becomes pale or dull colored in conditions of intensive culture in breeding halls. Feeding these fish with algae can improve their color. For this purpose, rainbow trout larval stage feed was used as the base feed. The treated foods obtained from the powdering of the basic food were impregnated with different percentages of ...
