A technique for segmentation of images of baked good is presented. The technique employs a Self-Organising Map to identify the characteristic colour development curve (bake curve) for each product. Segmentation is based upon the colour information contained in the bake curve. The technique is trained with only positive exemplars of the product.

This paper describes an image browsing and retrieval application called GalSOM. Bitmap images are described by their colour histograms and sorted using an improved variant of the tree-structured self-organising map (TS-SOM) algorithm. The advantages of using such a system are discussed in detail, and their application to the problem of image theft detection is proposed.

A system for automatic motive identification of large folksong corpora is described in this article. The method is based on a dynamic time warping algorithm determining inherent repeating elements of the melodies and a self-organizing map that learns the most typical motive contours. Using this system, the typical motive collections of 22 cultures in Eurasia have been determined, and another gr...

Self-organising artificial neural networks were used to reduce the complexity of joint kinematic and kinetic data, which form part of a typical instrumented gait assessment. Three-dimensional joint angles, moments and powers during the gait cycle were projected from the multi-dimensional data space onto a topological neural map, which thereby identified gait stem-patterns. Patients were positio...

This study examines the potential of a selforganising map for classifying corporate takeover and merger targets using a range of financial information about companies. A sample of 200 US quoted companies, half which were merger or takeover targets and half which were not, are used to train and test the model. The best self-organised map correctly classified 94.8% of the firms in the training se...

Memory-based learning (MBL) has enjoyed considerable success in corpus-based natural language processing (NLP) tasks and is thus a reliable method of getting a high-level of performance when building corpus-based NLP systems. However there is a bottleneck in MBL whereby any novel testing item has to be compared against all the training items in memory base. For this reason there has been some i...

This article is concerned with the representation and generalisation of continuous action spaces in reinforcement learning (RL) problems. A model is proposed based on the self-organising map (SOM) of Kohonen [Self Organisation and Associative Memory, 1987] which allows either the one-to-one, many-to-one or one-to-many structure of the desired state-action mapping to be captured. Although presen...

Kohonen’s self-organising map is used to identify the colour development of baked goods from samples taken during baking. The resulting bake curves represent the colours characteristic of a particular baked product. Images of baked goods can be segmented and foreign bodies identified using these baking curves.

| We present a system for automatic mapping of complex gray-scale images onto each other. The system includes a Neocognitron-like structure for hierarchical feature extraction, a 3D Self Organising Map to determine feature classes for unsupervised training, and algorithmic methods for landmark correspondence and image warping. We present results showing successful registration of MRI brain scan...

We present an analysis of the comparative performance of non-linear dimensionality reduction methods such as Non-Linear Mapping, Non-Metric Multidimensional Scaling and the Kohonen Self-Organising Feature Map for which data sets of diierent dimensions are used. To obtain comparative measures of how well the mapping is performed, Procrustes analysis, the Spearman rank correlation coeecient and t...
