The month of birth of boys undergoing orchidopexy in the Oxfordshire Health District during the years 1974-83 was analysed. A significant seasonal variation with a peak in April was found for those boys operated upon by paediatric surgeons at a young age (0-4). Possible causes of this variation and its relationship to the aetiology of cryptorchidism are discussed.

Cosmetically satisfactory scars were achieved in 94.5% of skin crease orchidopexy wounds sutured with subcuticular polyglycolic acid. Of twenty-seven similar wounds closed with interrupted black silk sutures 18.5% developed hypertrophy at the medial end.

Cryptorchidism is the most frequent defect of the male urogenital tract at birth. Laparoscopic exploration revealed an intra-abdominal testis lying between the internal inguinal ring and external iliac vessels. The testis was visually in good condition and, in contrast to the accepted proc...

THE undescended testis is more susceptible to trauma (Gross and Jewett 1956) and to malignant change (Collins and Pugh, 1964; Altman and Malament, 1967) than the normally placed testis. It has been shown that degeneration in an ectopic testis begins at about the age of 5 years (Scorer 1967; Cohn 1967). It is therefore generally accepted that orchidopexy should be carried out at around the age o...

Acute spermatic cord torsion is a urologic emergency requiring accurate diagnosis and timely intervention to effect testicular salvage. We report a case of adolescent testicular torsion successfully reduced following manual detorsion under sedation at the Emergency Department. Scrotal exploration and bilateral orchidopexy were subsequently performed as a semielective procedure.
