Acute rhinosinusitis is frequently associated with secondary orbital infection, most commonly subperiosteal abscess. Although orbital subperiosteal abscess is a deadly disease that might lead to blind and cavernous sinus thrombosis, recent review of literature showed that immediate surgical intervention might not always be necessary for subperiosteal abscess. Orbital inflammation secondary to s...

Acute sinusitis is most often a mild self-limiting disease. However, it may progress into severe and life threatening complications. One of the commonest being orbital complication of which visual loss is a direct consequence. In this 10 year retrospective study, the nature of orbital complication, clinical presentation and treatment modalities and outcome seen in children with acute sinusitis ...

Purpose We describe this case and review the literature, to allow this to be a cautionary tale in the interpretation of fluid collections in the setting of spontaneous globe subluxations (GS). Observations A 58 year old female, with a past medical history of globe subluxation, was diagnosed radiographically with an orbital abscess, and managed with an orbitotomy. However, no abscess was ident...

BACKGROUND The spread of infection from the ethmoid sinuses to the orbit occurs directly through a congenital dehiscence of the lamina papyracea or via haematogenous spread through ophthalmic venous system. Hence orbital complications of paediatric rhinosinusitis are usually unilateral at presentation. METHODS We describe three children with bilateral orbital cellulitis that occurred as a com...

A 30-day-old, previously healthy, near-term neonate presented with fever and swelling of the left eye. Orbital cellulitis of the left eye was diagnosed by computed tomography. Both blood culture and pus that was drained from the orbital abscess were positive for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which was found to be a strain indigenous to the local community by a molecular me...

Orbital cellulitis and abscess formation are rare complications of sinusitis, however acute orbital inflammation is secondary to sinusitis in about 70% of cases. Delay in diagnosis must not occur to avoid serious complications such as blindness and life threatening intracranial sepsis. A case is reported in which despite late referral, emergency surgical intervention was sight saving.

Actinomycosis is a very rare cause of orbital abscess usually attributable to direct spread from adjacent structures. A case of actinomycosis of the orbit is presented, which was treated as orbital pseudotumour for 3 months before progression of signs and symptoms, despite high dose steroids, led to the diagnosis being reconsidered.
