In this paper, we are interested on simulation tools developing for designing optical component based on Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG), with potential uses in optical communication systems and sensors. Both principals for understanding and techniques for synthesizing fiber granting are emphasized. We focus on the two major applications, which are the design of Encoders/Decoders for optical access n...

A spectral-hole created by locally pressing a fibre Bragg grating (FBG)s exhibited a wavelength-shift within the FBG bandwidth. A sensitivity of 74.3 pm/(N/mm) was obtained for pressure applied along the slow axis of a high birefringence fibre. ©2006 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (060.2370) Fiber optics sensors; (060.2420) Fibers, polarization-maintaining

In this paper we review some of the dominant topics in fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The combination of theory and simulations shows that these structures can use in filters, nonlinear fiber optical applications, soliton propagations etc. We discussed the theory of FBGs, grating solitons, Bragg soliton generation in intrinsic media and birefringence effects in FBGs together with some numerical s...

A high-resolution fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor system using a linear-cavity fiber laser scheme is proposed and numerically studied. The proposed sensor system can improve the sensing accuracy by using a discriminating FBG pair in conjunction with a fiber laser scheme. This FBG sensor system can resolve the temperature up to 0.0005°C theoretically and can be applied for strain sensing and te...

An electrically controllable fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with polarization-dependent characteristics is described. The optic axis of a liquid crystal (LC) can be rearrangeable by means of external electric fields, which results in the change of an effective refractive index of an LC. The reflectivity and Bragg wavelength of an LC-cladding FBG can be controlled according to the refractive index of...

A novel approach for the reflection equalization of a phase-only sampled fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is presented, where the grating is specially designed as a simultaneous dispersion and dispersion-slope compensator with channels up to 51. The sampling-function used is given with an analytical form with a linearly-chirped sampling period and is optimized by using the simulated annealing algorithm.

Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor systems are being widely used as temperature measurement and strain measurement systems for aerospace structures, civil structures, and high rise buildings. However, the systems are rather complicated because the wavelength change must be measured using several kinds of optical filters such as Fabry-Perot filters, edge filters, and bandwidth filters. In this pap...

Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors based on the wavelength division multiplexing technology are ideally suited for structural health monitoring. In many applications, it is desirable to form several arrays of optical fiber sensors to monitor the response of structures. In the present study, we constructed an improved FBG sensor system using a wavelength-swept fiber laser which exhibits high outp...

A composite microstructure in fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with film deposition for hydrogen detection is presented. Through ablated to FBG cladding by a femtosecond laser, straight-trenches and spiral micro-pits are formed. A Pd-Ag film is sputtered on the surface of the laser processed FBG single mode fiber, and acts as hydrogen sensing transducer. The demonstrated experimental outcomes show tha...

In this paper, we report the numerical calculations for a thermo-optical model and the temperature sensitivity of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor. The thermally-induced behaviors of a FBG sensor in the gas nitriding process were analyzed for temperatures ranging from 100–650 ◦C. The FBG consisted of properly chosen photosensitive fiber materials with an optimized thermo-optic coefficient. Th...
