The propagation of temporal solitary waves, formed in the second-order nonlinear medium, is analysed in waveguide directional couplers. The influence of the thirdorder nonlinearity on the switching effect is also presented. Recently, the great effort of nonlinear guided-wave phenomena research is focused on the cascaded second-order process which can produce relatively large intensity-dependent...

The beam propagation method (BPM) used for the design of an integrated optical (IO) coupler was proposed in this paper. A modal of the IO coupler was set up in BeamPROP software that is based on the BPM, and then the modes and the bi-directional propagation in the proposed coupler were investigated. Finally, the structure and dimension of the coupler was determined.

Nonlinear wave propagation was investigated experimentally in coupled waveguides by means of the cascaded nonlinearity in quasi-phase-matched second-harmonic generation. With a specially designed wave-vector-mismatch distribution along the propagation axis, cascading was optimized for low fundamental depletion. High-contrast, ultrafast all-optical switching with switching powers of tens of watt...

A new kind of resonator based on a nonlinear directional coupler with feedback is presented. The steady states are found and the map of the system is iterated, showing the existence of bistability, period doubling and chaos. The dependence of the dynamic features is discussed in terms of the parameters of the two different schemes of feedback studied in this work. A new device based on one of t...

We propose an exactly solvable model of soliton-based pulse control that describes the physically important situation when the soliton period is much longer than the length of the coupling region in a nonlinear fiber coupler. This case can occur, e.g., in fused-fiber couplers. We demonstrate that the problem of soliton interaction and switching in such a coupler can be reduced to a linear relat...

A novel design for an ultracompact, high-Q notch-rejection filter is presented, and an analytic expression for the transmission properties is derived. This folded directional coupler shares the properties of a Fabry-Perot resonator and a directional coupler. We compare and contrast the device to high-Q Fabry-Perot cavities in photonic crystal waveguides.

Couplers and hybrids are devices in which two transmission lines pass close enough to each other for energy propagating on one line to couple to the other line. A 3dB 90° or 180° hybrid splits an input signal into two equal amplitude outputs. A directional coupler normally splits an input signal into two unequal amplitude outputs. This terminology “directional coupler”, “90° hybrid”, and “180° ...

Abstract—In this paper, a novel wideband directional coupler using coplanar waveguide multilayer slot-coupled technique is presented and implemented. The coupler uses two coplanar waveguide lines etched on two layers and coupled through an hexagonal slot etched on the common ground plane located between these layers. Firstly, conformal mapping techniques were used to obtain analytic closed-form...
