The feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) vaccines that are currently in wide use are generally poor inducers of virus-neutralizing antibodies, although such antibodies appear after recovering from challenge. However, the presence of neutralizing antibodies in cats recovering from natural FeLV infection clearly correlates with resistance to subsequent infection and passive transfer of antibodies can pr...

Serum samples obtained from 51 free-ranging black bears (Ursus americanus) in northwestern New Jersey in February and March 2002 were analyzed for neutralizing antibodies to West Nile virus (WNV) and St. Louis encephalitis virus. Three (6%) of the black bears tested positive for WNV-neutralizing antibodies. One additional sample was positive for flavivirus-neutralizing antibodies but could not ...

BACKGROUND The rapid and continual viral escape from neutralizing antibodies is well documented in HIV-1 infection. Here we report in vivo emergence of viruses with heightened sensitivity to neutralizing antibodies, sometimes paralleling the development of neutralization escape. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Sequential viral envs were amplified from seven HIV-1 infected men monitored from se...

Recombinant modified vaccinia virus Ankara (MVA), encoding the measles virus (MV) fusion (F) and hemagglutinin (H) (MVA-FH) glycoproteins, was evaluated in an MV vaccination-challenge model with macaques. Animals were vaccinated twice in the absence or presence of passively transferred MV-neutralizing macaque antibodies and challenged 1 year later intratracheally with wild-type MV. After the se...

We evaluated titers of homotypic and heterotypic neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) to Andes and Sin Nombre hantaviruses in plasma samples from 20 patients from Chile and the United States. All but 1 patient had high titers of NAb. None of the plasma samples showed high titers against the heterologous virus.

To investigate recovirus infections and their association with zoonosis, the prevalence of the virus-neutralizing antibody against three recovirus serotypes was tested in the general population and in zookeepers. Neutralizing antibodies were detected in a significantly higher number of zookeepers than in the general population but with significantly lower titers than in macaques.

The current experiments use the Friend retrovirus model to demonstrate that vaccine-primed B cells are essential for sterilizing immunity, and the results indicate that the requisite function of these cells is the production of virus-neutralizing antibodies rather than priming or reactivation of T cells. B cell-deficient mice were poorly protected by vaccination, but adoptive transfer experimen...

UNLABELLED Following natural dengue virus (DENV) infection, humans produce some antibodies that recognize only the serotype of infection (type specific) and others that cross-react with all four serotypes (cross-reactive). Recent studies with human antibodies indicate that type-specific antibodies at high concentrations are often strongly neutralizing in vitro and protective in animal models. I...

In this case report, we describe for the first time a patient with thrombotic thrombocytopaenic purpura (TTP) accompanying highly active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) that was associated with non-neutralizing antibodies against the plasma metalloprotease ADAMTS13. Those non-neutralizing antibodies could have been the cause of ADAMTS13 depletion and consecutive TTP. More extensive analyses ...
